Well, I had some fun and games :( car was reporting a missfire on Cyl 1, swapping coilpacks with number 4 moved the fault, so without checking any further I went down the road of getting a new coil, after all it cant be both HT leads can it?

MB wanted £140, rang around and got sent a part from Europarts, cost £65 and was delivered next day.

When I went to fit it, the LT plug wouldnt insert all the way, so I took the coil back off, and tried to remove the HT leads, guess what, they wouldnt come out, no amount of tugging moved them, I ended up pulling so hard that the copper ends snapped off and remained stuck inside. The coil has been returned for a refund.

Lynall from mbclub kindly offered to give me two HT leads but as I was now desperate to get my ride on the road, I bought new leads from MB, @ £25 each. And thats all it was all along, two broken HT leads that were most likely damaged when I had the plugs done in its last service (non MB)

well, thanks guys for the assistance, and thanks again Lynall

Had a misfire and lack of power on my CLK320 and on checking the diagnostic programme on my laptop it showed a fault in voltage at coil/s - there are 6 on the 320 -which on e-bay were £65 a piece! I toyed with the idea of getting 1 or maybe 2. but decided in the end to go the cheaper route - £38 for a complete replacement set of HT leads, and although it was a fiddly time consuming job removing and fitting 12 (yes 12!) leads, it completly cured the problem and car is now running faultlessly:lol: so, it pays to start with the cheapest solution and work upwards and maybe get lucky and save a few quid.;)

We've had this on two seperate cars in the past year or so - the old leads functioned well up until the point they were moved aside to change the spark plugs. I'm guessing that they had become hardened and brittle towards the plug end, and removal caused them to break up internally.

they didnt feel hardened, but its very clever how the merc noticed the drop in spark and shut the cylinder down. saves the cat from certain death

Unfortunately this is a common fault on Mercedes Vee engines, the leads break down or the metal flash guards on them track out on the cylinder head.
