Is it still possible to get the bumper inserts for a 1996 280 estate. They are the ones painted the same colour as the body.

If so, is it s DIY job to change or more involved?

Pretty certain most car mnufacturers keep parts for 10/15 years and mercedes keep them for ever.
Ring up your main dealer and see.

Bumper centres are available next-day from a Mercedes dealer. The rear one is £95 and I'd expect the front to be the same

They're all supplied unpainted, as are the lower body plastic panels

Thats sods law Nick,,I bought some 124 panels in 1990 and they were not painted,, the next one I did in 1993 they came ready painted. I suppose the stocking becomes too great after a number of years

A bit of a highjack, but it is relevant- For interest, how easy is it to change the 124 estate rear bumper centre? Mine is badly twisted and I am debating whether to change it. Does the bumper need to come off or does it clip on ?

The center section does not come off on its own, the whole bumper must be taken off
