i'm thinking of replacing this as i have a slight oil seep around this area.

ive been told its the only thing that is known to fail on them and it looks relatively simple to do too being at the front of the engine. as far as i know its never been done and the housing to it seems as old as the rest of the engine IE probably the original one.

its also starting to run a little warmer in traffic too, as in the needle nearly touched the next white line above mid in traffic and putting the blowers on didnt bring it down like it usually does. i dont want to blow my head gasket so would rather replace this before the proverbial hits the impeller!

question is, is there a marked difference between GSF/ECP water pumps to the Genuine Merc parts other than price? plastic impellers etc?

Plastic impellers were done away with some years ago or they should have been, they are alli now, several have fitted the GSF versions with no problem as of yet, what is the price difference, if you have the 111 engine I have the papers on changing it

i'll check later, i'm not sure atm.

do you have the papers for doing a head gasket? just so i can file it in the event of it needing doing down the line...

good news about the plastic impellers, the Merc ones are £150 i think [although i havent checked properly] and the GSF ones are £40

Perhaps I'm missing something - but, why are you thinking of replacing your water pump if you've got an oil leak? If you had a water leak, I would understand.

valid point cruncher.

however, there is a seep of oil from the water pump and to inspect it i would have to take it off. there is no record of its replacement so as a matter of course i want to replace it. the unit above the water pump is also seeping [unless that is the sole culprit of the leak] which i also want to investigate. i think that is the cam sensor? its the unit that sits under the black plastic cover on the front of the cylinder head.

i'm doing a big journey in August and i was told by a mechanic that the water pumps are the only things that can fail on these engines, and it does get quite hot in traffic [sits about 1/2 way until you sit in traffic and then it goe 4/5 between the 1/2 way mark and the next white line on the temp gauge.

If this helps, there's absolutely no oil in a water pump - the pump itself can't be the source of your leak.

It's fairly normal for temperatures to climb in traffic - all cars do it.

If you water pump had failed, you would have boiled up a long time ago. What fans are fitted to your car? Do they work properly?

i have a thermostatic radiator fan as standard, and i think it does work. the coolant is a good colour, and the radiator isnt damaged.

according to my dad, the aux fan on mercs only come on when they get really hot, and i dont let it get that way before putting the blowers on hot and opening the windows in traffic. that makes a difference.

hmm...i wonder whether its the aux fan.... i'm sure i've heard it come on before.

The Visco fan comes on at full power at between 93-97c you can sometimes hear the little click then it speeds up.

Many members have done the carrot test and it should chop one up when engaged on full power.

Any electric fans do not cut in below 100c

ah right

well if the top is 120 and the middle is 80 that makes that white line 100, which i dont let it get there. the fan should be working its just i have never let it get that hot. maybe i'm just being paranoid but its a big fluctuation when standing, more than other cars i've had.

Malcolm i dont think its a viscous coupling as they are fitted onto the waterpump with a left handed thread yes? mine is on the rad with wires.

i might just do it anyway, for the sake of £50 and piece of mind i dont think its unessesary[sp]

OK yours is an electric fan on the rad, then it will not come on until over 100c, a petrol engine is at its best at 105c-110c
