My first post...
Having broken my first rule I am buying a 2006 E320CDI with 36000 miles and a mislaid service history.
Does anyone know whether the service history for a given car is available through the dealer network?

Anything in particular I should watch out for?

Hi and welcome to the forum. All services will or should be logged on the merc computer system for this car at this age\ milage so before you do anything check with a main dealer.

Hi ce --no problems there --a 2006 3 year old 36k mercedes service history will be on the international data base-- go into your local stealer with any documents you have --get your free coffe and discuss with the service manager your cars history in detail ! and push him for a deal on an inspection and check up ?

Not so. Read this forum and you'll see that many use independent garages for servicing. In that case an MB dealer can give you no record.

I would never buy a car without a full service history We know a high proportion of secondhand cars are clocked.

I thought "clocking" was illegal?

Its about time the DVLA had a 'phone number to check on any previous mileage registered on the MOT. Its all on the Computer

IF you go to hire a car and forget your "paper copy", the company 'phones the DVLA, you acknowledge you are the person, the 'phone is handed back and your car is Hired.

I know in the 70' Henley's zeroed all its used car!

Lots of things are illegal; but they still happen.

You can get MOT records -maybe someone with a better memory than I have will post the link. But isn't the OP's car too new for that to be of much use?

Yes, that's very sad, but true.

Despite all the electronics, none seem to be secure enough to protect the odometer.

"clocking" is not illegal.
Failing to disclose the fact is illegal

Im afraid you are sadly wrong if you think having a full MB service history means the car has not been clocked,
you could go to the moon and back in between each service or mot and get it clocked before any work that will have the mileage recorded and no one will ever know.

Does clocking mean adjusting the timing?

In this particular case I've been lucky. The one previous owner was a fleet leasing company and they have kindly provided a summary of the services which all appear up to date.

I think that may be wrong. Would not STAR diagnostics detect the journey to the moon and back?

Besides clocking is largely done by unscrupulous dealers at time of sale, not by owners intending to keep a car and have it MB serviced.

One minute with the right gear and you can tell a cars computer system anything after you clock it, sorry "digitally adjust the mileage"

And these days with the mileage trail so easily evendent it is far less likely that dealers will bother with adjusting the mileage apart from maybe the very bottom rung selling bangers.

It is far more likely to be owners who clock their cars before each service/mot.
