Auto box won't change gear.

Hello all,
Just found this excellent forum and signed up.
I have just had a problem with my gearbox and would appreciate any advice.
My car is a 2006 CLK 350. Whilst driving home this afternoon, the car just decided to stick in third gear and would not change up or down either in auto or with the tiptronic. When i stoped the car, changed into park then back into drive, seemed to engage with a jolt then stay in first gear and would not change up. Just managed to crawl home ( wasn't far away thankfully) and reverse onto driveway.
This is my first Merc Auto.
Anyone know what this problem could be....Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome,,sorry about your bad news. this should be the speed sensor plate gone down, not too expensive to fix, the part cost £135 and with an indie the whole job around £250

gearbox problem?

Car: E280 CDI . 55 reg
problem: 4 months ago, erratic gear change. then got stuck in probably second gear. Merc dealer diagnostics:
ECU need changing plus other things...wanted £1160. I refused.
Went to Auto specialists. on his computer it diagnosed faulty "Turbine speed sensor". he reset it on his PC and erased the memory...it worked but the problem recurred. he reset it again, , it drives ok.

went to another Merc tech guy. on Merc computer came with lots of faults...he said he need to upload new software as it is runnig under voltage. then he will decide what the fault is.

has he been honest with his advice? he said the car get stuck in 2nd gear as this the emergency mode.

the first guy said he can change the speed sensor and see wat happen.
me a bit confused

your help is much appreciated

help much appreciated

jaafar,
i am suppossed to get my car back today, but just spoken to dealer and he said they are having a problem with the 'code' for the new Turbine Sensor and Solenoid Pack that they have fitted to my car....

Seemed genuine enough but will wait and see.

Hopefully i will get car back today and it will say on the report what they have fitted. I will let ya now what happens...

Cheers.

So it is the Turbine sensor then?
why Merc guy want to upload all the software first then decide?
the other guy who is the Auto specialist did say it is the sensor as shown on his laptop....I am sure he is cheaper the Merc guys

will it solve the problem? as the Merc diagnostics showed 3 pages of faults here and there...I got a print out of these as well

Many thanks and good luck with your car

Honestly when I was in Berlin, all the Taxis were E class mercs
Rubbish cars I think

Well just got the car back, all fixed, seems fine.
Fault was turbine, service manager said the unit that they replaced was called the 'Valve Pack' which includes the speed sensor/turbine.

Just took it for a run, changes gear very smoothly...new oil also fitted.

Mercedes agreed to pay for all the parts, even though the warranty has just run out, so very pleased. :D:D:D

Good luck to the others with similar faults, hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Madmoose....

I would let the guy upload all the software updates and see if this cures your problem, unless he is charging you an arm and a leg to do so..

software

It make sense about uploading software first.
The Garage was a Merc dealer in Newport, Gwent. now they changed to VW main dealership. The guy said its not Merc dealership any more but he retain the equipments and will continue to work as independent machanic for Merc. He did promise that he will not charge alot.

his printout of the quick test log did shaw:

1- electronic ignition switch: i he did say "i " mean something need further carification eg by new software
2- Common Rail Diesel injection Fault
3- ESP Electronic stability program: i
4-Driver SAM: signal accquisition and actuation module: fault

Code:
9024: component M5/2 (HCS pump) or the lead has short circuit
9052 component M6/1 wiper motor is blocked

event:
9008 supply voltage of control unit is too low
909A Fault in CAN communication with control unit BCM
9034operational fault of component A7/3n1 (SBC control unit)
5- passenger SAM: side signal acquisition and actuation module: fault and i
code:
9020 component M13 ( heating water circulatin pump ) has short circuit

6- Rear SAM Fault
code 9078
event:
9044 control unit BCM not transmitting data on the CAN bus
9038 circuit 30 has an undervoltage of < 8v
9039 circuit 30 has an undervoltage < 10.5 v. this fault is mainly listed when the engine is started.

7- overhead control panel: i
event
9001 supply voltage of control unit too low

8- Upper control panel: i
event:
9032 supply voltage of control unit N72/1 is too low

9- Battery control unit: fault
code; 9040 terminal 30: undervoltage

10- On- board electrical system( voltage supply: i

event
9051 consumer shutoff, stage 1
9050 consuner shutoff, stage 2

11- instrument cluster: i
event;
9123 Fault in CAN communication with control unit vwhicle power supply control module

12- ASSYST PLUS- PLUS Active service system: fault
Code:
9102 coding of control module ASSYST PLUS is faulty

13- radio tuner: i

then some faults with door control modules shawing too low voltafe for all doors.

So it seems there is under voltage which might be the reason.
as to the auto gear problem, could it be that its a software problem and the car go into emergency mode which is second gear?

The guy seems genuine, and said: we should not rush to change parts till we upload the updated software.
I my self started to think: it make sense

Any views from Merc experts or any who had similar experience with such a car are most welcome.

Best wishes

ps. I do not know what all these codes mean or even what CAN mean

Undervoltage would also cause your gearbox ecu to throw up faults and even cause the autobox to go into safe mode..
You will probably find that a lot of the listed faults have been caused by ..say a low battery.. and when cancelled will not return.. See how the upload goes and dont agree to any fixes until you are satisfied that the car requires them....Some of the teccies on here will be able to advise you much better..

Valve pack was changed on my W211 at ~50K miles as it stuck in 3rd, thankfully under warranty as the part was ~£950 according to the dealer (plus fitting of course)
