Mercedes W211 E class Estate 2.1 cdi
Hi all

I'm looking to change my Volvo V70 to get the car I always wanted. The trader who I'm looking to buy from I have had 2 cars from in last 2 years with no problems.

I'm looking to buy an E270cdi Avantgarde Estate tip auto 2005 05 plate with full MB service history 1 owner BUT it has 145,000 miles on the clock. My Volvo (54 plate) has now done 142,000 without problems since I've had it.

As I do around 30,000 miles a year & plan to keep the E class 3 years, any views on what issues could be looming (ps it hasn't been used for towing)?

Thanks

As you are planning ahead--3 years @90k miles I would look for a slightly lower milage when buying and FSH--around 80/100k--If you get a 3 year breakdown warranty (as per RAC type) when you buy then you should be pretty well covered.

Have a look on Autotrader there are plenty ? price circ 9/10k--one with only 49k on but its a bit dearer--be choosey and hold out for a really good one I am sure you will get a good deal--see and test drive at least four or five you will get a feel of them and just know when its the right one . The ultimate I found at present for sale is a 9k miles one on Ebay in Southampton but it 17 grand!!-depends what you want to pay really.

Thanks teddycatkin; I thought the same myself but as this one is high spec (leather, xenons, etc) I thought I might take a chance (mileage is of course too high for any warranty). At least 05 plate should avoid the dreaded valeo & rust issues & at 35k miles per year it should have been doing mainly easy motorway miles; I've seen the car & it's pretty much unmarked. Thanks for your quick response

In principle there is no reason a properly looked after E270 couldn't do 250k, but, at that mileage, it's nearing the end and things are going to start giving trouble.
I agree with teddycatkin, go for 100k or less to start with.
Leather is very common and xenons are standard on the avantgarde models. Not sure what the whole spec is but those 2 you'll find everywhere. The avantgarde and elegance are pretty loaded when basic so look for uprated alloys (check out the tyre prices first) and things like command, memory seats etc.

Anyway, the 270 is a good choice, well proven mechanicals, great long distance cruiser. Plenty of grunt for those 50-90 lane changing sprints and 36-45mpg. Driving a merc on a motorway is a different proposition to other cars. People get out of your way in a way they simply don't when you're in other cars, I do 25-30k pa in mine and after 3 years she's still a pleasure to drive. Just done 50 miles this morning and feeling fresher when I stepped out than when I got in.

Thanks again jberks. After 3 years my car allowance should have covered the cost (£10k) so even if the value is minimal I won't be out of pocket.
I've looked on Autotrader but can't find anything at this price for a 54 or 05 plate Avantgarde with leather & the 270cdi, certainly not under 100k miles - most are E220cdi which might feel a bit underpowered after a 163bhp 5 pot Volvo? I thought about a C class estate but she who must be obeyed doesn't like the looks
Alloys are standard (cheaper tyres, better ride quality ??)
Had an E class E230 3 years ago 97 reg (rust bucket) but loved every minute wafting around in it. Take the plunge I reckon. Thanks again
