Ok, as per my other thread I've just bought a E240 (V6) took it for a "Tootle" down the M55 this morning AWESOME!!!!!

Question though...... when doing 70 / 75 ish my RPM is sitting at about 3000

Is that right????

I ask because I also have a V8 Discovery that sits at 2000 RPM when doing the same speed I use "cruise" on both of them so very rarely go over 75 / 80 ish

Thanks (In advance) for your replies guys

That is right, and the first thing that I noticed when going from a 129 320 to a 500 230

Its not that high an RPM for a petrol motor. It can rev round to a redline of c. 6500rpm. Its probably generating peak torque @ c. 3k RPM and quite handy for the car in its top gear to be sat there @ 70mph as quick acceleration is still available without having to drop down a gear.

The gearing is probably 25mph/1000rpm in top so by 100mph the car is only turning over @ slightly over 4000rpm so by 150rpm the redline is reached (but a 240 V6 won't have a hope of going that fast anyway).

Perhaps you meant by 150 mph?

When I got caught in Denmark in the 129 320 doing 140mph the counter was just over 5.25 from memory, and it would still go faster given the chance

Not with the star i cant, need a password from germany!!

I havent tried of course!!!

On the retractable roof car like the SL /SLK the adapter shifts the speed signal so that the roof will close up to 30MPH,, the cars do not lock until 35mph and the TV will stay on,, so does the move the limit on the speed as well

Get the password. Probably a fair few folk would pay for that to be removed.

Alas I wouldn't as getting above 135mph (indicated) is a bit hard. Perhaps I need a longer driveway to get the extra 5mph

Your car will probably be geared for 160-170mph vmax.

In my old 4x4 (x5 4.4i) the 6th gear was 30mph/1000rpm and 60mph was only 2k rpm, 90 3krpm. 6krpm (redline) therefore 180mph. From memory a Porsche Cayenne S I drove was exactly the same ratios.

Your car sounds slightly shorter geared, but now by much (5k = 150mph in the X5) but more realistically so as peak torque will be reached at a lower, more road friendly speed that the BMWs.
