I drive twice a year to our villa approx 90 mins from Marbella in the mountains towards Granada.
I take the Channel Tunnel and stop either in Cognac or Limoges, depending which route I take. I stop the next night in Northern Spain either in Zaragoza,Tamplona or Burgos.I drive down to my villa the next day.
Total trip is 1700 miiles from Wirral and 1400 from Calais.

I sometimes use the toll roads and sometimes the Route Nationals.I would advise you to purchase a sat nav with full european maps if you do not have one.
Let me know if you need any more info and enjoy your journey.
Regards

Hi John.we are going from Calais to Mijas Costa. I was planning on one stop over near Bayonne/Bordeaux.Any suggestions would be great. I have a sat nav with the euro maps.
I have been trying to sort out a hotel for one night but trawling through websites for a cheap hotel 2 adults 3 children is driving me mad.

The best way to Spain is in an SL500 with the roof down. The route is irrelevant. Just enjoy the journey in a fantastic car.

Have you considered the Portsmouth or Plymouth to Northern Spain ferry? Appears at first costly until you factor out petrol, tolls and 1 night hotel. My BIL has done it a couple of times, thoroughly enjoyed the ferry - which gets into port about 6am so he was able to drive to Malaga in a day.

Excuse me asking, do you let your villa out ?

If so I would add it to my personal list as we like staying in different places each year on our motoring holidays.

Follwing on from what Dosco said ............Yeah ALL that + Drive to the Airport ( it's a big place with lots of noise) you can't miss em normally!!! Park up the E Class in the car park get on a plane (This looks like a big cylinder with flat bits stickin out each side) When you get off at the other end go to the "Car Hire" desk & ask for a SLK 500, once installed in the SLK drive SLOWLY around the Airport & ask the confused looking blond lady (Usually aged about 25 to 30) if she requires a lift in your SLK.....

(Her answer will be YES of course) head for the nearest 5 Star hotel & start to enjoy your holiday !!!!!!

SIMPLES tch!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are your two best routes,if you want ferry/tunnel crossings without cabins.
Via Channel tunnel or Dover/Calais?

Essexmarb.jpg

Via Portsmouth-Caen,Brittany Ferries (6 hours).

Not much difference in cost or distance, you could go one way and return the other.

I did 18 return trips between last October and June, best route is via Santander, either outbound or homeward bound, least driving, most relaxing.
I also tried Poole/Cherbourg and Portsmouth/St Malo and Portsmouth/Bilbao with P&O,but these are night crossings, two nights with P&O!!!
The route I did most was Portsmouth/St Malo, only one crossing a day and return Portsmouth/Caen,a choice of three.
All done in a lorry, but the principal is the same.

If you go to http://www.viamichelin.co.uk and enter in your route, you can study them in detail.

Regards,
Nick.

Stu,

I stop in the French B&B`s (Chambre Dhotes). You can google for such places near where you want to stay. They are good value and charge per room.
I can recommend an excellent one outside of Limoges,(with family room) but it is not on your intended route.(Let me know if you want this)

Another option is to enter your intended stopover into BOOKING.COM a website I use a lot when staying over in Northern Spain.

You will at best average 60mph but with 3 kids you can reduce that to 50mph,which with 8 hours driving will get you 400 miles, not including the inevitable toilet stops! So look around the area approx 350/400 from Calais.

Regards

John

Don't know if this is any help? The Logis de France site in general is always worth a look for places to stay in France.

FWIW, the TeleAtlas cartography on TomTom sat-nav's - unless it's absolutely the latest release - can be a bit lacking in the boonies of Spain. It's OK if you're on major routes and in bigger towns, but outside that coverage can be patchy.

Thanks for the link Phil - I have added it to my favourites.

I tested it on a place we visited earlier this year - although then I booked via Opodo, or Expedia, or someone else. Using your link I found the same hotel, but a slice cheaper! I will use your link in future.
