18 Digit VIN Number?

I am just about to take delivery of my new E280 CDI - new to me that is but first registered in Mar this year. While idly reading through some posts I found the Russian website where you can enter your VIN an dfind out information about your car. I was surprised to find that the VIN on my vehicle order is 18 characters long rather than 17 - very odd.

It may of course be a simple typo but has anyone else seen this length of VIN number? It is recorded as the chassis number but begins WDB which is how the VIN numbers start I thought.

Any thoughts appreciated.

This is the Russian VIN decoder. Enter your number and it will tell you (all) about your car.

That link is only good for cars up to 2006

All Mercs have the 18th digit, its for factory ID only. The first 17 are all that are of interest to common V5 and parts ordering on EPC.
