Every now and again I see a Mercedes with the wrong badges on it. Today I parked behind a black C class saloon, on a 54 plate. On the boot lid it had CLK200 on the LHS and CDI on the RHS. Why do some owners do this? Does it fool anyone?

Yes, there is a bit of this about. Helen spotted AMG notation at the wrong side of a boot lid,and MB themselves changed the notation of SLs early in the 1990s (August 1993, IIRC). For, for example, 300 SL would have become SL 300.

You also get the reverse, where people will remove the CDI badge from an E 320, for example, to make it identical to the petrol car.

It does not fool those who know about these things, as you have proved. I guess it is a personal preference they have?

It may also cause problems with insurance i would think, if a car has AMG or M or GTI on the back it may be more attractive to our little hooded friends.

I once spotted a Citroen 2CV very professionally badged on its rump as 0.6 GTi - I liked his style!

Where my other half works there's a C class coupe with CLK200 on the rear.

I agree with Hawk, why do people do that. I can understand debadging, but wrong badges?

There's a diesel VW Touran I've seen around here a couple of times that someone has drafted an Audi grille, wheel caps and badges onto as well as a couple of RS4 badges and decals.

It doesn't look right and it sounds even worse.

It's the same reason why some people wear make-up.

No it isn't, make-up is to enhance what you already have. How is putting an incorrect badge on a car enhancing what you already have?

Badging

Could it be that the car had some damage and the body shop didn't know the difference? ;)

I agree with most posters here. either:-

1. Damaged repairable and the bodyshop messed up on badge location.
2. Someone rectifying a de-badged car and messed up on location.
3. Someone trying to make out that they have a better spec car than it is (keeping up with the Jones).

IMHO I'd prefer to see a debadged car than the wrong badges or right badges in the wrong place.

When I was 17 I had a Mini Van with a Bristol bus badge on the back. Everyone was fooled, every time I stopped, people tried to get in.
