Hello,

and welcome to the forum. I looked at buying a B Class 2 years ago, but there were very few second hand at that time (recently introduced?) and those that were around were priced as for new cars.

Worth checking that they have become more sensible in value for money, otherwise it may pay you to look at other models in the range.

At the time I chose a pre-registered C Class estate for less than the cost of a B Class and it has been excellent. All depends what you want, but avoid paying a premium price, if that is still an issue.

Depends what you want. I had a B class and it was excellent. It has amazing room. About as much legroom front and rear as an S class and the same sized boot too. And being a hatchback it is very versatile. Much roomier than a C class. I've owned a C class too and liked it. I wouldn't say one was better than the other. Merely different. I had the b200cdi with the CVT auto box. The box is excellent -smooth as silk and pulls 40mpg per thousand when cruising so only 2,000 revs at 80.

Quite a bit quieter than an A class especially much less road noise. And the ride is much better too, partly due to longer wheelbase. Sport suspension spoils the ride and worth avoiding.

Having driven a few A & B class courtesy cars for many weeks, I would recommend a good second hand C Class or better for the same money.

If you must have a B, I found the petrols & manuals had no redeeming features at all, only in the diesel auto version could I tolerate it.

I have always wondered why there are so few Bs around. A very versatile vehicle. Quite fancy one myself. Is there an AMG version?

Much more popular in Europe. Expensive compared with the A class but then it has the room of the S class so why not? There has not been an AMG version. There was a 200 turbo petrol version that was quick, but it didn't sell that well. The B200cdi is under 10 seconds 0-62 in both manual and auto form. I found that by far the best engine for the car. (I bought one when they first came out and collected from the factory. Well worth the trip. Fascinating. Drove back through the Champagne areas of France -leisurely trip and made a holiday of it).

Have a look at the search engine on the MB website. Personally I would look for a 180cdi SE or a B200cdi SE with auto box. If you select nationwide and prices from £10k to £16k (to allow for haggling) you will get a good selection.

I would avoid sport suspension and sport pack like the plague as it gives a very hard ride on the UK's poorly maintained roads. You will get 12 months approved used guarantee (though with your budget you will be able to buy some cars with plenty of manufacturers warranty. For example there is a 2007 one with only 16k miles at the Dorchester dealer. And at Chichester a 2008 one with plenty of kit including leather seats, 13k miles only and asking a tad over your top price but they will come down with haggling. Looks good.

I sat in one this morning as Exeter have 2 new ones,,I must say that the extra room over the A is useful.

Strange thing was that it felt smaller than the predecessor.

I would tend to avoid the auto's as the suffer with torque converter issues and the cost to replace is horrendus as the engine is often removed.

Can beat a manual B-class.

Are you referring to the CVT box in the B class?

Hard to beat the offers on the MB website. For example the B180cdi automatic for only £2,999 deposit and £269 per month on a 3 year PCP deal at only 5.8% APR.

And if you prefer Hire Purchase, MB are offering an extraordinary 1.5% APR H.P. deal. Never seen one like it before and we’ll probably never see one again after the recession.

BTW most of the subsidy for the finance deals comes from MBUK although it is described as 'dealer's contribution' etc. You can haggle some discount as well as taking the finance deals.

Hmmm...£12,683 to rent a basic B Class for 3yrs/36K miles.

They came out around the time I got my C Class and I did think many people might switch to the B Class but it doesn't seem to have happened. Around here (NW) they're a very rare sight.

I found the same Rory. My C Class was cheaper than the B Class then, and they were asking a premium for used cars. Sounds like there are not too many of them around yet. I wonder if the used ones are still more expensive than C Classes of the same age/mileage?

I'd heard that Mercedes offered loads of B classes to the dealer network at never to be repeated prices even before the credit crunch, as they were not selling that well. That's why a lot of dealers up here now have fleets of them as courtesy cars.

Don't let the traditionalists put you offer little b; it is a fine car with many unique features and they've sold well over half a million of them. But it is more exclusive than a C class in the UK. Good. That's nice.

As for £12k over 3 years, that is £4k per year which for a brand new £22,000 car is good value to all who know the car market. Look at it this way. Very few cars have a 50% residual these days after 3 years. And if you paid cash for a £22k car and got 50% back after 3 years that would cost you £11k. So to pay £12k including financing costs, and with a guaranteed residual, is good going by any reasonable standards.

But if that is not tasty enough, take the 1.5% HP deal which I doubt even Rory would find hard to grumble about.
