I have a mercedes A class 150 ,four years old (05) with 40,000 miles on the clock.I am the second owner ,brought from dealer as demo.
I am worried because my starter motor has failed and it is going to cost me £1800 to fix ,£700 for new starter and £1100 for damage to fly wheel etc. Mercedes is going to pay £1100 as a good will gesture and i have to find the rest.My question is should a starter motor go this quick and if not who should pick up the bill. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If MB are happy to put £1100 towards the bill then you're doing OK.

None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
£700 for a starter motor - Jeez  I hope the gold plating looks nice.

Not even putting the three-pointed logo on it would justify such a price.

I think that you have to slip the engine out,,not good though and little thought for the owners

Surely the engine would have to come out anyway to rectify the (£1100) damage to the flywheel?

Not enough caffeine, Malcolm :p

Sometimes, I think that garages will inflate the cost of repairs so that a 'goodwill' gesture appears even more generous. Maybe I'm just cynical.

I think that you are correct,,just take the fitting cost of struts to a 230, ,and there are easier ways than those in WIS sometimes

nice to see a bit of realism on the thread at last. some of the early replies were clearly written with the merc (sorry) mercedes tinted specs on
sure things go wrong with cars, but unless it has had a very tough city / short journey sort of life then a starter motor shouldn't pack in after 40,000 miles
the fact that it did is bad enough but to cost the repair at £1800 is obscene and outrageous - and can only be the result of extremely poor design leading to stupid workshop times. MB clearly agree - hence the offer to pick up most of the tab - but what would a good indie charge ? more than the £700 that patching is left to pay?

SAM or Alexander would know the answer to this, try changing an alternator on a sprinter or vito takes hours with all of the drive shafts to remove
