What sort of things do you wish Mercedes would do?

Three that I would like are: -
1. A hard wired slot on the dashboard into which a Garmin satnav would slot and be connected to the radio speakers (which would cut out when directions were being given). I find the Garmin so much better than COMAND partly because you can remove it and update it at home on the computer, and partly because it has speed cameras and sites of likely mobile units too which can again be updated at home.
2. Dogracks for all MB estate models (C and E class, ML, GL and R class) preferably modelled on the excellent system in the Volvo XC70
3. Improve the fuel economy on the 6 cylinder diesels by as much as they have on the new four cylinder units.

You can plug into the Aux, and this is fitted to most cars

  • Put some curves back on their cars and throw away the setsquare they appear to be using
  • Stop following other manufacturers, stick to quality and ignore fashion
  • Build cars that are reliable and don't break so easily, gearbox valve pack failing at 50K and turbo at 60K is not acceptable

Neither is 4 struts failing at under 40k plus 2 x SAM's, plus phone module plus ABC leaks, plus the central gateway

Not to mine or many many others.

And that would not be the same as a hard wired slot. Rather like the telephone pre-wiring adaptor into which the phone is slotted and then it is integrated into the cars sound system etc. Have a look at the Renault that integrates the TomTOM.

It should be possible to just drop the Garmin into a slot that would mean it was then fully connected. Tom its aerial for TMC. To the speakers for best sound quality. And so that the radio et would be turned down when instructions are being given. At the moment, in other ways it is light years ahead of COMAND but you have to rig it up each time and have trailing wires.

It has 7 digit postcodes, linguatronic if you want it, easy to update on your computer at home. COMAND (older ones) require a new DVD every year just to update them - that costs more than my Garmin! The newer hard drive ones can be updated by dealers? Is this correct? And at what cost?

You can take the Garmin out and use it when walking or on buses etc exploring new towns and places. And it guides you back to where you aprked the car.

The maps can be updated at home.

It shows every fixed speed camera and usese the internet to provide the location of all likely mobile police speed units -and this too is updated on your home computer. It really is so good I'd still want it even if I had COMAND.

Employ more salespeople at their flagship store so that I can talk to someone about dumping 40 grand into a new Viano!

Adding a docking mount for Garmin would mean they accept that another SatNav system is needed in place of Comand, so I doubt thats going to happen.

But if they was to provide such a system, then it would really have to be to Support TomTom which is a far superior system. And yes, I have all 3 systems :)

Buy a VW, sad to say I don't think you would regret it (you have one already ;))

Had a similar problem with the VW guy when I looked at Transporters. Guy didn't offer a test drive or loan of their demo. Trouble is MB as a brand has become the generic term in my industry. Clients expect Vianos or S Classes and nothing else will do, even if in some cases a different vehicle is actually better.

Never a truer word etc. You only have to take a trip to any of the major airports to see which marque's hold court.

I think they could offer the Garmin with a dock for say £500-£550 (nice profit there) and the COMAND for those who prefer it and are happy to pay over £2,000. IIRC they did offer the Garmin with a dock on the facelift A class and B class? That was in the Press release for the facelift but whether or not it came to the UK I don't know.

I think Tom Tom is similar in many ways but not as good IMO. Tried both; found Garmin better. And Halfords said the Garmin is much more reliable. Most airlines and large ships use Garmin navigation equipment.
