I've just replaced the Dunlop SP tyres on the front of my R129 SL320 with Goodyear F1's.

No chance to try them in the wet yet but first impressions are very good. Steering feels slighlty lighter but more positive and the old tendency to follow ruts in the road has gone.

The feelgood factor is enhanced by the price, they cost £202 for the pair including valves, balancing etc., which was less than I was expecting to pay.

The supplier was Fast Fit in Kidderminster and they beat the lowest price I could find on the net for these tyres.

Thanks for that HG. I am due new tyres on the rear of the SL (advisory at last MOT, but I'm not convinced). I will give them a try.

I wouldn't want to rain on anyone's parade - but - I ran two sets of these on my old Alfa 156 SW. The grip wet and dry was excellent, the noise level good, and the handling very sharp. However, both sets went very badly out of shape on the rears some time before they'd reached the end of their natural life.

I put the problem with the first set down to just bad luck, which is why I went for the same again - but after several thousand miles I got the rhythmic thrumming and vibration back again, indicating the same problem.

The Alfa, while in many ways a superb car, was recognised as having a very compromised suspension and I thought the problem might well reside with the car rather than the tyre, but a recent internet search shows other people have experienced the same problem on different vehicles.

Keep a wary ear open for unusual road noise (rather like a wheel bearing going) and check carefully for uneven wear.

Caveat emptor......!

I have found that the tyres that have the large V tread patten are the quickest to go out of line and generate a noise or vibrations,,Avons some years back were very bad for this

I've had F1's on all my cars for nearly as long as they've been making them. Never had any issues with things going awry and always had exceptional wet & dry grip along with reasonable wear. Made one set last nearly 30k miles on my 4WD Celica GT-Four and that had over 300bhp for most of that time. I was at least able to rotate the tyres on that though - not so easy on the AMG ;)

I had some on the C43 - had only recently had them fitted though so no chance to see how long they lasted/well they went etc really before the damn thing got written off :( Up until then though they were fine - grippy and positive in feel. I'm happy enough with them to get them fitted to the CLK as and when the current rubber wears out as I've yet to find better :)

Cheers,
Mark

I swapped to Eagle F1 GSD3's after a set of Michelin Pilot Sports and my personal opinion is they are excellent. Lots of grip in the wet and dry. There is some road noise on certain types of roads - concrete motorway sections are the worst but on the whole they are pretty good. Love the tread pattern of course ! Tyres can be a very personal choice and it is difficult to compare brands when they are changed so infrequently. The other problem is that new tyres always feel better as they are replacing old ones with not a lot of tread on so the new ones are always going to feel better - in the wet especially. What we really need is 10 identical cars and the stig ! Of course one tyre brand may perform better on one car than another as well.....my head hurts now, just use anything and I will stick to the F1's !

I've seen some Audi drivers say the same thing about them going out of shape.

Im sure they have now stopped making Goodyear Eagle F1's and replaced them with an A-symetrical tyre. In my opinion The F1 is or was the best road tyre available and it gets top marks on all points from me. I sell Performance parts for a living (shameless plug) and if i could sell everyone the F1 I would be conscious free for the rest of my life. They simply sooo good.

However not everyone wants to pay that and most people opt for a middle of the road tyre. So i now mainly sell Falkens, both the 452 and the 912 are extremely good tyres and half the price of the Goodyears. I own a fleet of vehicles and all have Falkens on. Never had a problem with them so far.

I had heard that Goodyear had discontinued them, what a shame. Their website only lists 4 tyres sizes for the F1 GS-D3 now, none of them mine sadly...

Hi,
Had a set on the 43 and the rears only lasted 6000 miles, very dissappointed, but they were very good whilst they were legal.

Do not you think that your zero to infinity times are something to do with it :D:D

I can't believe that I have had these tyres for a whole week and I still don't know how they work in the wet:lol:

Summer is late this year.

I will ask the mods to delete this post :D:D:D

Crazy weather

Never mind the tyres, I'm getting worried about the weather!

Three weeks without measurable rain around here and no sign of a significant change. The garden is beginning to suffer and the we can only run the watermill for a couple of hours at a time.

Bear in mind, when the rains do come, the roads will be ultra slippery following the long dry spell.
