I drove out today for a 26 mile trip, 17 miles of dual carriageway and 9 miles in light B road traffic.

I live in Dorset and passed through Devon, all very hilly, with long ups and long downs. On the motorway section my SL500 returned 34.3 over 17 miles, at a speed of 50PMPH and no kick down. The last 9 miles on B roads reduced it to a commendable 31.1 over the 26 miles. MB quote 30.7 extra urban, and 22 combined .

So thank you mercedes once again

Well done Malc, You should work for MB testing team to generate these figures for new cars.

Well done you. For the S Class (W 220 Diesel), the numbers are:

Town mpg 25 Out of Town mpg 47.9 Average mpg 35.8

I topped up last night after 706 miles, and it took 76 litres = 42.1 mpg overall.

I have never managed 47.9 mpg, but then I have never managed to drive anywhere at 50 mph for very long.

No doubt the "computer v brim to brim" brigade will have thoughts on this!

Had it not been for stopping twice for hedge cutting the figure would have been better

The thing was Alex,, the lorries that overtook me at the start of the dual carriageway at 60mph were still in view after some 12 miles

I have done similar things with the 129 320SL and got 35mpg on careful long runs

Same engine, bigger vehicle, but 30.1mpg from cold start round the Alps, going down to 26.0 mpg after 525 miles. Most of this was in the Alps.

On an earlier thread, I posted tank-tank receipts which showed 25.7 over a 260mile journey around approx 70-85mph mark. Calculations showed the Fuel display to be out by 0.5mpg, which is pretty good.

Now all I need is Steve to remap and get me 15% more  .... then convert to gas and get an additional 50% more (per pound)

....and just for an insight, the final picture shows mpg at top speed

is that instant economy on your dash in the last pic? i thought those computers only showed journey average mpg! 18 mpg maxed out is good! probably better than my E300 turbodiesel! ive seen the rate the fuel guage drops at after a flat out (wont go to the 155 limiter by a fair way) blast of about 6 miles up the motorway! dropped the guage reading by the thickness of the needle!

Unfortunately not. The Autobahns can be congested and you do get middle/outer laners, so keeping a constant flat-out is difficult unless very late at night.

The pic below is an instant value reading, but when I get chance I intend to see what the real figure is by going round the A99 (Munich ring-road) flat out. Im seriously tempted at getting a re-map as they can take the Vmax to 259km/h (about 163mph).... speed really is addictive, the ML was bought for the family to use in the Alps, but its been so much fun, Im using it daily!!!

I regularly do a run to Bath from Horsham via the A272, A303 route. Always similar load of kids and junk, always similar traffic, always similar pace - lightish foot. My W208 CLK 430 on that run will do a little over 30mpg. My W202 C200 estate will never get over 30mpg. Always a fraction under. Big lazy V8's FTW!!

Biggest complaint I have about the 7G (other than it being a real pain shifting) is that it revs the engine to high, 60mph at about 2000rpm is way too high IMHO. I would have thought the 7G would be used such that 7th and even 6th would be overdrive gears. I also quite often have to click the steering paddles to knock it into 6th/7th as it tends to hold onto the wrong gear.

Stop/Start on the V8 would make them a lot more economical, but lovely motors, small highly strung or big lazy lumps... apart from the cost, Id recommend anyone to take the V8 over a 4/6.
