Hi

Some advise please:

At my last service, 10,000 miles ago on my C220 Cdi Coupe, I had 2 new front tyres fitted by the Merc Dealer, Continentals.

I have just noticed that the outside of the Front NS tyre is totally worn away, the Off Side has some wear but nothing like the NS.

Went back to the dealer and they have said I need a Geometry check which will cost £100, plus a I will need to new tyre to do the Geometry check

My questions are:

1) Is this the only way to see what the problem is? (I have read on here that to get the tracking right needs specialist equipment and not any semi trained tyre fitter)

2) And am I being taken for a ride, is the £100 a reasonable price?

Help and advise much appreciated.

Andy

Notice it says "Geometry check" - they'll almost certainly charge more if they actually have to adjust anything. £100 is cheap for an MB dealer.

My tyres wore just like that - the outer edges were scrubbed off completely - NS worse than OS. But I haven't done many miles for the last couple of years and it passed 2 MOTs at MB dealers, the first one they issued an advisory and the second time they didn't mention it. My car was drifting left a bit - swapping the fronts over made that much less noticeable - I guess the extra worn n/s being moved to the o/s balanced things out.

I changed the tyres anyway a few mths ago - the baldness was looking bad - and they still had 3-4mm in the centres but they done 40K so I thought that was OK.

I had that with my E55 and despite the expensive MB geometry checks...I had two... the local Wheel and tyre specialist, who had the proper gear, set her up perfectly.
Then I was getting 20K a set from the Cont'is
Dealers are over price for this like everything else!
:D

I notice the inside of the C class's are wearing so will get as much mileage as I can then swap them and get ger set up properly!
They have all told me that they can't set them up properly with badly worn tyres, so that rings true at least :D

If you take roundabouts and right hand turns a little slower this might save some wear, when I lived in london was lucky to get 10,000 out of n/side front tyre, now in Devon its the back tyres that wear quick because of accelerating up the hills.Hope this helps

Parts Required

Dear All

Phoned the guys at alignment centre reconmended whilst they were very helpful and more competive, business meetings, meetings meant I would be too far from Somerset, so stuck with the local dealer.

There verdict was that the NS Control bush was too worn to carry out the geometry check, so Ok, but why not picked up at the recent MOT the carried out, Blan looks!!

Any way they quoted for the work and I have spoke with M.B.S and would prefer them the d the work, and replace both sides, as little voice is saying do both sides if one side has gone.

I think they want me to ge the parts so the help I need are the parts numbers for the Cross Strut, one part on the dealer quote and Bearing, the 2nd part they quoted. Obviously NS and OS, can any one help with these, I can give the dealer numbers but I am not sure whether they are the MB numbers

Interesting point about corners and roundabouts.
Years ago,a lorry tyre fitter tolds me that the front nearside tyre of any vehicle always wears faster than the offside for two reasons.
One,the road always slopes to the left for drainage.
Two,drivers are always willing to drive a lorry into a right hand bend faster than into a left hand one.
Apparently,it's psychological, when the lorry leans to the left, the driver feels slightly higher and therefore less threatened than, when slightly lower, as the vehicle leans to the right.
I must say,his explanation does make sense and I have become aware that I drive exactly as he suggested.

Regards,
Nick.

Tis true lots of the trucks i see at work the nearside front spray flap is worn away on the outer edge but have never seen the offside worn, plus modern trucks handle pretty good and also shift as well!
