Now - W210 E320cdi
Bassman, I have done the bottom ball joints, track rod ends and anti-rollbar bushes on a w210 E320 in about 1/2 day. That was in the driveway with the car on axle stands.

The job wasn't too bad, although access is obviously not as good as with the car on a ramp. It can be a bit tricky getting the old joints off as there is a locating pin as well as the taper joint, but as long as you have a big hammer it will be ok! Put on some releasing spray a few hours before you start.

I saw a car in Norwich the other day and I can guarantee the driver wished he had changed his earlier. His car was on the side of the road, ten foot skidmark, and his wheel was askew very neatly tucked under his front wing.
It certainly makes you think.

Well all done and dusted. Took about 20mins a side, but O/S ball joint the locating pin stuck in the hub carrier and I had to use some heat to get it out. Apart from that a lot easier than the 124s.
Did someone mention that the ball joint did not mate up as well as the old ones?
The gap left on mine is larger than the original ones but the locating pin is in well so I suppose they must be OK. The make is Sidem from GSF anybody else used them?

This is one of those posts that encourage those of us with some mechanical savey to DIY. However just by way of how difficult it can be read on: -

I had mine changed by my chosen Indie and whilst the off side was done in ten minutes the N/S was seized/frozen in and took best part of 1.5 hours and in the process part of the tool used for such jobs was damaged. Given I was going to DIY when my physical condition allowed (shoulder issue) I fear that I would have come unstuck big time.

So there is always a warning on the tin to be read and whilst some can and no doubt do change them in minutes there are those jobs that clearly require a lot more time and are on the boundary when it comes to DIY.

Hi Dosco, I agree with you that a lot of jobs can easily turn into a nightmare if you are not prepared or don't have the right tools. A good quality ball joint seperator is essential I think as I don't think it would have moved without it. Not everybody has Oxy-Acetelene torches (or even a good blow torch) to loosen stubborn parts and if you can't remove the part your stuck! Some jobs you start thinking they are going to be easy and they turn into a nightmare. I did the anti roll bar bushes, easy job everyone says but one bolt shears off and two days later after having to drill it out and re-tap the job is finally done. Not easy with the car on axle stands.(oh for a lift!!) If I could afford it I probably would send it to a garage every time, but you do get a lot of satisfaction when the job is done. Anyway enough of my rambling.

Just like when I was changing my front disc,,one side was a doddle, and done in minutes,,the other one would not move, no matter how hard I hit it, my friend from the local garage just happened to drop in, he looked at it, and then one blow and it was off.
