A short story for you. My Merc has recently been playing up when trying to start when she’s warm. So I was just preparing for the worrying trip to the garage to have it looked at, obviously at the same time, preparing for an even more worrying trip to the Bank Manager to explain why a large chunk of my hard earned was about to disappear from my account.
Then, in a flash of inspiration, following a few large glasses of veno, I thought I’d put the symptoms onto this forum and see if anyone might have heard of it before - important to note that this was at 10pm on a Sunday night. Once posted, I carried on watching the telly and enjoying the veno. Fifteen minutes later and there were three replies all pointing to the same thing (crank sensor), so this at least meant that when it came to taking it to the garage, I could give them an idea of what to look for.
Then I noticed in the signature of S-A-M, there was mention of “MBS of Southampton”. Now bearing in mind I work in Southampton, it was worth an email, so I mailed Colin of MBS, to see what the situation was. 9am Monday morning and there was a reply from Colin explaining about the problem and a contact number. Ten minutes later and following a conversation with this really down to earth, nice bloke and my pride and joy was booked in for the following day for a lunch time fix up. Arrived at 12:30 and was back on my way again half an hour or so later, with the problem fixed, plus a full computer check over from Colin. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. It’s rare these days to come across really down to earth, honest people, who are genuinely helpful and not condescending to the un-mechanically-educated.
First thing I’ve learned is how efficient this forum is. Second thing is, I’ve found an excellently priced, quality Merc specialist (definitely get yourself booked in there, if you’re looking to get anything done). Lastly I've been able to stick two fingers up at the people who said "Don’t buy a Merc, it’ll cost you a fortune” – well I’m feeling right now that it was the best decision, in motoring terms, of my life! Cheers all.
