Hi fellow forum members.

I just had a very nice visit to the local main dealer that suprised me, as they were actually offering some really good deals.

Anyway, I cold started and took an E270CDi (44k miles) out for a drive, which was very nice. The only thing that concerned me was that while it didn't struggle, I thought the start sounded a bit rough and the engine was noisey for a couple of minutes until warmed up. After that it was refined and performed great, but I don't know what these should sound like? Is it normal for the 270 to be noisy at start? 220's seem quieter.

The other thing was that when braking to a stop, sometimes I could hear an electric motor noise and SBC H came up on the display. Is the noise normal? Not the sound of the SBC pump wearing or something? SBC H makes me think it was hill hold locking the wheels or something like on the newer Audi's?

Oh and finally, I don't know what the motoring press are always moaning about SBC feeling too fake and detached as I couldn't even tell I was using SBC, the braking felt perfect and stopping was smooth.

Thankyou for your time

The noise is normal,,if it is too intrusive the little damper can be fitted,, the SBC H shows normally the the hold is activated,, I will check later to see if this is an error,,there have been some updates on this

if you saw 'SBC-H' when stationary then do not worry, it was just holding the brakes on for you so you could rest your foot. as for the noise of the 270, yes they do don't they!! probably normal, but obviously hard for us to guess at without hearing it. as malcokm says, the noise is normal and easily acclimatised to. and i agree that the feel of sbc is just fine thanks.

Just to be on the safe side I looked it up (memory again) if the SBC comes on with another message, then you do something and what it tells you to. Some thing that has not been up for years

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies.

I can live with the sounds, I was not complaining about that, it was more of a case of checking that everything sounds ok. Like I say the 270 was loud at startup (I'm used to VW TDi's which are reasonably quiet or Peugeot HDi's which are quieter than petrol engines when new) but after a few mins it performed great and was quiet enough from inside the car.

I guessed that the SBC H was going to be hill start, but thankyou for confirming ..... is it normal to hear the pump though?

In a dilema now .... I wanted to go for a E500, but to my shock the local main dealer has offered this E270 at a great "We will beat any like for like price" plus a 12 month warranty and a fresh service and MOT (plus the car is a later model AND has low mileage) its almost rude to not accept their offer

SBC Hold is when you apply the brakes, you can take your foot off the brake pedal, and the car will not move until you touch the accelerator . Do not get out of the car though,,as that will defeat it

This thread may clear up the issue of the sounds of a 270cdi when cold

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=55569

I had the same qualms, as I came from a quiet and very smooth Volvo D5 diesel, but appears to be a characteristic of the engine - a bit clattery on cold start but a nice growl and smooth delivery when warm.

The other thing I struggle getting used to is the way the auto\engine work together in delivering the power as I thought the box was slipping when I first got it . The way the rev counter goes straight up to a rev position and the power delivery comes later makes sense from a diesel point of view but still 'feels' wrong.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the link. Probably fine then. It did drive well.

I am wondering if you may have an issue however? I took a nearly new c180k out and I was suprised at how much the revs had to go up to get the car pulling away at a reasonable pace. When I got into the e270cdi, I was amazed at the difference, the pull away seemed 4 times more responsive than the 180k

That low rev torque is quite something when you have been used to petrols

I hope not :D

It's not a lack of power - there is more than enough. What happens is I press the loud pedal, the revs immediately jump to, say, 2300 revs and sits there. The speed then catches up. I have noticed it does this all the time. Perhaps it is because I am still driving it like a manual and I should be more gentle\progressive with the accelerator. If, on the other hand, I jump on the pedal the power is there in abundance and it rockets away. Which I like. Very much :D:D

I come from a Volvo S60 D5 manual ( I think you have a V70 auto) so you'll know that although a great engine it does need a little prod of the accelerator to get it going so perhaps I need to unlearn that now I have an auto (and plenty of spare torque)

I do not drive many diesels Dave, the last one was a SAAB 9.5 or something , I just drove around playing with the low down torque but it was an auto,,,the second gear just knocked me back in the seat with hardly touching the pedal, to do that in the V70R I would have to near floor it

I was thinking about another thread where a guy said about the lorries having 16 gears so that they can use all of the max torque for most of the time, this should mean that the 7 g box does virtually the same, the 320cdi is dam near as fast up to 60pmh as my SL500. and the driving technique would be very different in doing the 0-60

Hello Malcolm,
Can you please explain the "little damper" fitting with regard to SBC pump noise? I think my SBC is noisy as I can hear it groaning/moaning from time to time during a journey and especially from cold first thing in the morning.
Thanks.
