Have I over priced my car??? Been for sale for over 3 weeks and only had one enquiry. Is it overpriced or is it just a slow market. It is a wonderful example.

I sold my wifes car a few months ago and my father-in law sold his car too. Both vehicles were in lovely condition and would have sold quickly in a good market. In both cases we listed them on ebay as classified ads and on pistonheads, it took over 5 weeks for a serious buyer to materialise for each. (both sold via ebay in the end by the way)

It's a slow market, plus you are also selling what is (and I don't mean this in an unkind way, just being realistic) an old, big engined, big miles, thirsty car - the demand will be reduced still further as the mainstream majority are looking for cheaper/reduced motoring costs.

Why not put it on ebay as a classified ad as well as just pistonheads - as they say, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

As Malcolm, I would not want to reduce it further - it is already a steal for anyone interested.

I am sure the market is slower at present - end of the "summer", nobody has any money and there are a number of lower mileage cars around.

Dropping your price further won't help any of these things. Now that you have asked the question you might well have attracted interest from a Forum member. It looks a nice car.

Sorry, but why is it necessary to reply in such a strange form of language?

Language must adapt, it always has, and it always will, but 'text' speak makes no sense outside of it's original remit of compressing a message to less than 160 characters.

I will now crawl back into my middle aged hole and tut about "the young folk of today....."

If I hadn't already got an SL500 I'd have bouight it, I love the colour. There is a J reg SL280 for sale at a local garage for £5950 so I guess your price is about right for a private sale. As others have said you will have to be patient - credit crunch, Christmas coming etc. If you can afford to do so you might be better waiting till spring to sell a roadster.

As a prospective buyer myself, I find myself in this exact position you describe. I had hoped to have been in my E class by now (having joined up a year ago when i started looking), yet other forces have conspired against me and I've had to adjust my timescale - the benefit of this is that I have now realised I would be better to actually wait anyway and put a bit more money into the purchase and get a better specced vehicle, rather than deciding I could only afford one about half the price and buy it now.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey  (However, I can understand that from the opposite side of the fence, this isn't quite what the OP would want for himself as the seller)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Following your advice I will hold out and keep it at 5799. Also I think I will put it on ebay next week perhaps.

Best car in the world at the worst time to sell. Hang onto it until the Spring and you'll probably get two hundred more. I would not reduce the price.

PS it's a 500SL

but where's the market for this kind of car and that age ?

5 litres for goodness sake

it is likely to be a second car

and people that can afford to run a 5 litre car will be able to afford to buy a newer model.

there are quite a few lovely mid 1990's 320 sl's which are going to be a more popular car in my opinion.

Actually the 500 sells as well as the 300 or 320 it always has and at least 3 bought by members here in the last few months. There is always quiet times in the motor trade.

I concur with Top Cat. I'm stashing cash for my SL but new toys (2.8i Capri off a very good friend of mine as a favour to him), insurance (on three cars is not quite as cheap as it was) and preventative maintenance (MOT advisories plus tyres/MOT).

I will never get a loan or credit/HP as I live like I was when I was growing up on low income. I am also nervous about what the mortgage interest rates will do in the next two years.

That car looks a good price - looked at a similar aged one in Bristol that was a contradiction as it was £5k on the internet and £6k in the showroom and needed some work on indicators and passenger seat. Thus someone will snap your car up if they like it in time - some cars have been on sale since Xmas (when I started to look at 89-02 SL's).

If you put it on EBay it will not reach £5000, car dealers are selling 1992 sls for £5000 top spec with less mileage, and a guarantee, and they have over heads to pay for, your asking to much, no I am not a car dealer just a retired engineer being honest . Hope this helps

Hi, your car does look really nice in the advert and I'm sure it is "good value" in an arbitrary sense, but the point is if you really want to sell it now you will have to make it stand out from the crowd.

On private sales it is normal to expect some negotiation on price and at the price you have it advertised at you could expect people to try making an offer at £5000, even if you think it should be worth more. The fact that you have not had any enquiries at all would indicate that either there are very few buyers out there at the moment (or maybe you are not advertising in the right places?) or that the price is way to high and people are being "scared off".

As others have said it is never a good time to be selling at this time of year and it really would be best to wait until next spring. If you really must sell now suggest you just bite the bullet and advertise it as widely as possible with a price just under £5000 and be prepaired to drop another £100-200 just to get a sale.

Anyway, good luck.

Dave

A very good example will always be worth more that an not so good one, they are a specialist car with a certain following, it is not a good time right now, that is all and I would not drop the price, as it will not help, the prices that these car are at now are as low as they will ever get I think, the 500 does not have wiring issues. If you did lower the price to £5250 that would mean that you would get £5000 in the hand if the car is as described

It is unusual to get Malcolm writing at such length, and these are excellent points.

By dropping the price further, you may well not attract a wider audience and you running the risk of underpricing to get rid of it - whereupon people will suspect that there is something seriously wrong with the car and that could blight the sale.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I apologise for the 'text' language I used in my earlier message as I now realise that it is not appropriate for this forum. We have a beautiful language and we should use it properly and not resort to slang, text lanaguage or other violations in a decent, well-mannered society/forum. In my defence (albeit a weak defence) I posted the 'infamous' post from my Blackberry.
