My new Merc has come with a brand new JVC KD-R301 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver which is OK but the rear 4 speakers are quiet and almost muffled, even on full fader to the rears and volume up they’re not great. The fronts are fine and belt it out.

I don’t know much about car stereos expect how to switch them on and turn them up hahahhaha. I am not after a massive sound system just one that sounds clear and I expected better from the rear speakers. My last Merc had a real good sound and that was a JVC system too.

Any thoughts? Don’t want to buy a new system just get this one sounding better.

Its the quality it sounds muffled, wind the volume up and its there but no where near as loud as the fronts seem to be. if it was just the two parcel shelf ones being dull i would say yeah the cones have had it but all 4 seems odd. It did occur to me that the system is a 4 speaker feeding 6 and that's the issue ??

Could it be worth adding a small amp,,not a super thing,just something that will increase the sound

Hi,
If the stereo has been wired in other than using the standard ISO connector there could be a possibility of incorrect polarity on the rear speakers, this i think could cause muffled sound. But do bear in mind that the rear speakers may just be U/S they are,nt the best speakers in the world, the fronts may sound good as they have been replaced already possibly when the stereo was replaced.

It is also possible that the rear speakers have been detuned or even optomised to take into consideration the rear seat passengers...surely if the driver can feel the vibes from the rear speakers then the passengers must be in agony ..unless he is bopping to the beat and she is feeling the heat.. man...

For 6 speaker on a 4 outlet the rear ones could be wired in series, that woul reduce the sound

Either the tweeters have blown on the rear speakers, or they are subwoofers / midbass and not full-range, or you're feeding them via the subwoofer output or you have a low-pass filter on that feed switched in by mistake
