Hi All,

Quick question on real world fuel economy and what you're actually getting (which is not necessarily what the trip computer states).

I know the trip computer isn't very accurate so I run a spreadsheet and always fill up, even the spreadsheet can have inaccuracies due to the pump cutting off early or the forecourt being on an angle (no OCD's here...) so it is only over a number of fill ups that I can really get an accurate reading.

Having said that my last fill up was 79 ltrs which was 708 miles at 40.74 mpg :D

Overall average 36.49 mpg

As a comparison the last fill up in the Caravelle was 84 ltrs over 388 miles at 21.00 mpg :-( Previous fill up was 86 ltrs over 425 miles at 22.47 mpg. Overall average 25.41 mpg

I know the trip computer regularly states 700 miles before next fill up but this is the first time I've actually broken the 700 mile mark before filling up. I wonder if I would get >800 miles with a remap....:rolleyes:

What distance are you getting on a tankful?

Mine is always within 1-2 mpg what ever way I work it out, but then much easier on mine as all over the figures are lower on my car

I'm the same, within 0.5mpg of the stated trip computer mileage.

I normally fill up until overflow, as having previously had an ML270 which cuts out at 2 gallons before full, I got used to just pumping more fuel until it bubbled out.

Now angle of filling station I hadnt thought of, but there again, I normally try to park level as I check the oil.

I wish this 320 engine was in my Viano, I think it will only average about 32 MPG

Snap! Like you I get excellent economy from the IL6 in the W220. Like Blobcat, I fill up each time and keep a spreadsheet on Brim to Brim data.

In the 26,000 since I bought it the average is 39.1. Over the last few (summer) months, including a couple of trips from Warwickshire to Scotland, I have covered 4704 miles on 111.3 gallons (42.3).

This comfortably beats the 35.8 "combined" figure for the car, as beloved of DVLC but does not approach their figure for out of town motoring (47.9) although, in fairness, I have never driven it at 56 mph for a full tankful.

I have exceeded 700 miles on a tank on a number of occasions.

For a heavy car with excellent performance and "automatic everything", I think this is excellent.

After all, the Issigonis 850 cc mini had a top speed less than my cruising speed, and could not achieve the same average mpg!

My 220CDi C class - trip computer always optimistic. I always keep a spreadsheet record of tank/tank fillups and the onboard computer is between 4.8% and 7.8% optimistic. If only one could adjust my car computer on STAR to read say 5% lower to enable it to be more accurate. That gripe said the worst tank full gave me 38.47mpg and the best 46.56. Overall average in the car's 15000 miles - 41.68mpg. Not very much town work - mainly country roads and motorways. Hopefully the engine is still loosening up.

My E240 V6 is surprising frugal around town (for a big heavy car) I put £45.00 in & so far have covered 303 miles ALL short trips around & about the Fylde coast

I calculate that out to be around 31.5 MPG

Longest trip was 12 miles........shortest about 1.5 miles (Yeah I was far too lazy to walk!!!!)

On a recent trip from Glasgow to Manchester and return I was averaging 49.9 mpg at an average speed of 68mph in the S-Class. Luckily enough I was never held up in traffic hence the high numbers. My W140 S-Class on a good run at 56mph could get around 35 mpg, but most days it was nearer 18 mpg.

I also have a classic Range Rover which I doubt ever reaches 16 mpg, but as I do less than 3000 miles per annum I don't worry too much about that.

As for the old girl in my signature, I don't even check but I would guess somewhere around 18-22 mpg

My 1947 Rover P2 could go as low as 13mpg if I raced about, but never got better than 20 mpg, even on my best behaviour - which is why I sold it.

Even with petrol at 4/11d per gallon, 20 mpg was expensive in those days!

That was expensive Alex,, my first petrol cost me 2/7d per gallon,, the petrol did stay at 4 gallons for under a £5 for many years

And you got a dishy young female to fill it up for you into the bargain

Not like the miserable painted barbie doll look-a-likes of today who take your money whilst chewing gum and staring into oblivion - and that is just the 'men' the women are to awful to describe in such a genteel on-line magazine as this

Real money - not this kiddie stuff of today - when you could get 5 Woodbines for 5d and you could get into the cinema for a 'tanner' or a packet of dobber's cost a shilling and fish and chips with mushy peas inclusive of B&B and CofT supper was one and a tanner then your bus fare home was 3d and your girl friend paid her own way.....
