Please can someone advise....

My 2001 C220 cdi won't star.
The car won't lock, the steering wheel isn't locked and the key won't turn.

I think I pulled up, popped it into park, hit the hand brake and took the key out all at the same time.

I'm stuck in a car park now waiting for help....

Funny, I know.

God bless iPhones

hello, i am not sure if you can get the key out or not? if not, press the lock button for five seconds, then press the unlock button five times. if this does not work leave it in for a bit longer and it may reset.

There are several versions of EIS around 1998 it all locked the steering ETC but not all of the locking, from 2000 the EIS11 , the steering lock was taken away and all security built in to the ignition switch

....... and im back.

Car got home at 11:30 last night.

Car STILL broke.

The call out guy tried everything. Checked all fuses, diconnected battery, left key in for 10 minutes to sinc back up........ nothing working.

Its going in today to be hooke dup to a diagnostic machine to see if that can reset whatever process it is stuck in.

When the key is inserted it unlocks the steering wheel, but won't turn futher than that.
The strange things are that it won't unlock, lock, open boot with the key, and that the 'emergancy' key won't work in the door ??

Thanks for all your tips last night.

I feel that your fault is possibly a rear SAM not sending messages. when you put the key in the lock on DAS 3 systems, the key is activated and the data exchange has given the OK as the steering lock comes off but the wake up circuit has failed to recognize anything therefore the key will not turn. Parts of the remote locking are also on the rear SAM

Short of disconnecting the battery for 5 mins and trying again, if necessary after disconnecting insert the key and press any button to see if it will work, if nothing then it will have to go on STAR,, the gear shift could also be blocking the signals from the wake up or locking functions.

The car cannot start if it does not know if it is unlocked or not, or if it does not know where the gear shift is set to

That sounds like what i was thinking.........

I take it that the STAR is the Diagnostic machine ??

Can the SAM be reset through that ??

I tried manually taking it out of park and trying it in each of the gear settings, but nothing happened.

Do the battery disconnect first to see if it can sort out the lock up in the systems, a SAM might be the only fly in the ointment if it has lost its memory or has confused data, but it is worth a try,, we know now that the locking and the wake up signals are not working

The call out guy did the battery disconnect last night......... the only thing that happened after that was that key didn't activate the steering wheel.

It only re-activated it when we took it out of park manually. But still wouldn't turn after that.
