As per title - is this an ok change ? I understand the speedo will be about 3% out based on the change.

Have been offered some w124 alloys where prev Owner has changed the tyres to the lower profile. Recipient car 230te with 195/65/15 tyres that need replacing!

They should be 205 x 65 to be correct

The 165 tyres give a sidewall height of 107.25 mm and the 196 x 60 gives 99mm,, yes you will under read on the speedo, but only by a little bit

I thought the 205/65 where options, and only where 'sport ' suspension is fitted - well that's what my handbook says :)

The choice is yours, and it does not make much difference, just a touch wider

Speedo will not go 3% out by changing the tyre profile from 65 to 60. Its only going to make a difference if you change the total diameter by significant amount.

you may loose a slight amount of comfort by reducing the tyre size but it will not be very noticable

Chaps its all about the circumference. i.e. How far the wheel moves forward per 1 revolution. Do the maths, I was quite good at school but, that was 45 years ago.

Does look like it's 3% guys....

Tyresize.jpg

In one rev of the wheel the speedo thinks the car has travelled 1992mm.

On the new tyres it will only have travelled 1932mm ..... 3% less.

So the speedo will be optimistic by 3% which, assuming it was calibrated correctly to start with, is well within the legal tolerance of 0 to +10%.

(note that it is however greater than the 2.5% recommended by etyres)

Cheer up Malcolm. Just because you're feeling old, incompetent and useless doesn't mean the rest of us think so. :)

....Not all of us anyway. ;)

Thank you antijam,, just thinking on this, the difference between new and worn tyres is some 13mm and that must make a difference of 2%

Absolutely Malcolm - and even different makes of tyre of nominally the same size have slightly differing rolling radii.

So if you want to go for your best 0-60 time do it on worn (possibly to the point of 'slick' ) tyres. Not only will your speedo tell you you got there quicker, you actually will have got there quicker because of the lower effective gearing!

antijam, used a similar site to do the maths.. Speedo reads 70mph, actual 67.85.

Anyway have bought the wheels/tyres. Alloys are perfect with 7mm of tread on the tyres. All for £101 on ebay - better than spending at least double that for tyres:D

Anyone need some steel wheels with worn out tyres?
