it seems theres a strong possibility that the head may have to come off my old beast and have the valves/seats recut etc. can anyone give me an idea of what this may cost, if its required?

I was quoted £500 minimum for a cash job at a local trusted garage for my NA om606. It's meant to be quite an involved job. I am sure I read an on-line how to somewhere but I don't fancy doing it myself at all.

I think the difficulty came with the keeping the injection timing and setting the cams correctly and the timing chain guide thingies. The cams have to come off first to get to the head bolts and the cams are quite brittle.

It's probably worth doing injectors, glow plugs and maybe checking the valves whilst you're in there.

According to Autodata repair times, the cylinder head and gasket is 10.7 hours. I know the Auto data times can sometimes be a little exagerated, but I would have said it would be a good days work. Then there is then the additional time for having the headwork carried out.

I guess you wouldn't see change from £500, I should imagine it will be more.

TP, it's not looking good, is it? This must be fast approaching beyond economical repair. PM me your address and I'll come and collect it.

thats what i was worried about, but at least its not a problem with the pump!!! :p:p

the garage are having the injectors checked, and checking compressions. that way we will know if the head needs to come off to sort the valves or not!:cool:

then the old beast will be back to terrorise the county once more!:twisted:

All donations to the ResTuPeTOr 'Restore TP To Original' fund should be made payable to DOSCO and sent in a plain brown envelope. I will see that at least 5% of all funds donated reach TP sometime after cheques are cleared by my personal bankers at BankodeNigeria.:p

I think it's too late for that. TP should just donate the remains of the car to my up and coming project. :D

I know that and you know that, but if we keep it quiet I can make a bob or two and you can get a hold of his motor - everyone's a winner - except TP but we wont tell him;)

If mercedes done that job you would not get any change out of £1500, when you have it done insist on new head bolts. Hope this helps

time will tell. im reluctant to use a replacement purely on the basis that i may end up with the same problem in a few months time! and at least i know this engine (oil useage etc) so i will see what the result of the tests are and the various costs. its not with MB just a general diesel specialist local to me. it could be 1 of 3 things now, aparrently. low compression due to
1. valve seats or
2. hydraulic tappets holding the valves open.

3rd option is the injectors are beyond doing their job properly in their current condition. hope to know in the next day or 2

The odd thing here is that I cannot recall anyone ever having this fault on the forum before

well, they say theres a first time for everything! seems that all of my work and expense with seals, shut off valves, non return valves, pipes and strainers etc may never have been the problem. on the plus side of things, at least i know its all correct in those areas now. just need to get it sorted now. its needed for the 5th december!

no wonder we couldnt work out what the problem was or where it would be drawing air into the fuel from!:cry:

Edited for accuracy. :D

Keep up the good effort TP, I'll look forward to reaping the benefits...
