Caught up behind a small Fiat a couple of weeks ago - woman adjusting her makeup, hair etc. Single carriageway road. Eventually road opened to two carriageways on a hill. Foot down to get past her - car took off like a rocket. I knew that there was a fixed speed camera further down the road in a 30mph zone. As I crested the hill my car still going fast as I entered the 30mph zone. Then got caught by a police 'safety camera' van some distance before the fixed camera. Braked hard when I saw the van but too late. Received letter from Thames Valley Police and sent in letter pleading guilty - 42mph in ther 30mph zone. Any idea what fine/points I may get? Was not offered the speeding course as too far over the limit!

No idea - I am a goody-goody-two-shoes with a clean licence (one of the lucky ones who haven't been caught, more like ;))

Hello my first post.
I assume you did not get a fixed penalty notice with the letter? In which case you may be lucky & they will send you an extended FPN.
If not its court 3 points & about £100 is my guess first offence.

I heard you'd been caught so many times you had to leave the country! ;)

It will be 3 points, the fines depend on the circumstances

Hi,

I think you can expect fixed penalty £60 and 3 points.
Below are official guidelines:

Association of Chief Police Officers Guidelines
Below is a table of the current guidelines given to the ACPO but there are new proposals for changes to some of these figures.

Limit Fixed Penalty Summons
20 mph 25 mph 35 mph
30 mph 35 mph 50 mph
40 mph 46 mph 66 mph
50 mph 57 mph 76 mph
60 mph 68 mph 86 mph
70 mph 79 mph 96 mph

I would hope so as I think 50 in a 30 limit is a far more hienous offence than 46 in a 40 limit or 79 on a motorway.

Thanks all. Looks like it may be the £60 plus 3 points. Sit back now and wait. May be worth investing in a Road Angel or something similar to detect radar - any idea what is best?

The problem with laser detectors is that once they have detected a laser your already caught. You can get laser jammers, but they are illegal

Well it looks as if I will just have to pay extra attention, although to be honest I am normally pretty careful about speed limits and haven't had any points on my licence for some 30 years. My UMI satnav only gives road speeds when in navigation mode and only when that information is embedded in the roads! Whenin map mode (with no route set) the road speeds do not show.

I must admit I thought my speed of 42 in a 30 would have attracted a stiffer penalty than 3 points and a £60 fine (assuming that is what comes to me)
