My E220Cdi Avantegarde saloon tells me that a C service is due in 28 days time. What is a C service? Is it an expensive service?

Old Soldier,

The E Class has a service system call 'ASSYST PLUS'

the only thing I can tell you is that you need to allow up to 3 hours labour cost.

Part of any service will always include the engine oil and filter change but there are many other additional jobs that come into play over age and mileage of the car and what has been done previously.

There is a function using the steering wheel buttons and the dash reset button that can get you into the 'Service Menu'

This will display operation numbers and this then can be referred back to a Mercedes Benz service sheet. Only then can a proper quote for the C Service be provided.

Hope this helps in some way

to add to MB-car-tech's useful information, have a look here http://lite.servicemercedes.co.uk/pc/pc_start.asp . theoretically it will tell you what is due on your service, sadly not able to check your tyres or wipers over the internet yet though ;)

Thank you for replying but I am no wiser. I still do not know what a Mercedes C service is.

I bought this E220CDi Avantgarde auto saloon a year ago. It was a one owner low miles car. I like it, despite an automatic gearbox fault. I shall write no more about that because I do not want to upset the gearbox genie. My wife and I are keeping stumm until we are sure that it has been fixed. Something was done to the box the week before last and our fingers are crossed. And just about everything else.

The car says it needs a C service. My neighbour has had a look and he says it needs a C service. But the site that tells which service a car needs says it needs a B service.

I have read the servicing threads and one writer says that an A service is followed by a B service. I believe he was saying that the B service is followed by an A service. So there are two Mercedes services.

If there are only A and B services, what is a C service?

I have owned three Mercedes. I bought my previous car, a W140 220D saloon new, and I gave it to a friend last year when I bought this E220CDi. He has added another 22,000 miles to the 200,000 that were on the clock. I think he must live in it. He reckons it is the best car he has driven.

I serviced that car every 6000 - 7000 miles and it was money well spent. This E220 is going to be more expensive to service so I have another question. My annual mileage will be less than 10,000 so should I ask the technician to reset it to miles or time? Or would there be a monetary advantage if I travelled another few miles more than 10,000.

This E220 does not have the Teutonic looks of the W140 but it is a handsome car, economical, and it's acceleration is superb.

Yours sincerely, oldsoldier

PS. When I'm satisfied that the gearbox fault is a thing of the past, I will return and tell the tale. It has stumped some excellent Mercedes minds.

Teabag - I am 18 miles from Stockton and think I know which independent place you mean. At Preston?

If your current car was made post 2006, it will probably ask for a service one year after the last service - the mileage you do would not trigger it's distance criterion (15,500). Does the service record book describe a "C" service?

What is a C service.

The car was first registered 23.12.2005.

The service book has A service and B service. There is not a C service.

The "A" service is purely an oil and filter change.
The "B" service is an "A" plus brake and steering check and also air filter, fuel filter and pollen filters renewal if the mileage dictates they are to be done.

The "C" service seems to be a bit of a grey area on this forum, I can only assume it means extra work performed on the "B" service dependant on vehicle age or mileage, ie. ATF change, Brake fluid change and it only appears on "ASSYST" on late model vehicles. this work can be verified on the ESS if you enter in your VIN and mileage.
Please tell us the age and current mileage of your car and we may be able to advise more definitively.

Dependant on the age and useage of the vehicle, the service interval determined by "ASSYST" should be 2 years or 13,000+ miles for a car registered before 2007, or for a later model 1 year or 15,500 miles, whichever comes soonest, the technician cannot alter the frequency.

Yes "Prestige Servicing" at Preston Park is the outfit I referred to, until 4 years ago Kevin was service manager at MB Stockton and his partner Tony was his right hand man until they decided to go it alone and have built up a successful business 500 yards from their old employers; they can be contacted here: http://www.prestigeservicing.co.uk

What is a C service?

Thank you teabag,

The car is a 55 and the first three vin numbers are 211.

When I bought it last year the mileage was 13500. It is now 22565.

I have just remembered something. Last week the display told me that a service was due after another 2200 miles. That changed overnight to '29 days to a C service'

Kevin and Tony at Prestige know the car.

the service letter displayed in the cluster does not indicate whether it is due an A or a B service. it simply tells you and the service department roughly how long the workshop will need to complete the service. it is a very confusing and pointless system that has caused much misunderstanding.

mb car tech tried to explain this, and the site i gave you the link for will give you the definitive service items. obviously there will be things that instrument clusters and the internet cannot predict, such as your tyre wear.

i hope this helps.

Just had a C service on my E270 and the exact extent of the work required is determined by age, mileage and service history. Sorry this does not really help you but at least now you know.
Ken.

What is a C service?

alexander patient - that link tells me that the car needs a B service.

kayem - so a C service does exist, and I'm not dreaming.

The car was three years old when I bought it and its hodometer reading was 13500.

We all know that mechical hodometer readings can be altered by unscrupulous persons.

Are the modern electronic, or digital, hodometers tamperproof? Or can their readings be altered?

Thanks. oldsoldier

modern digital displays can be "adjusted", just have a google for 'mileage correction' and you will find several companies offering the service.

the notion of a C service is not really anything meaningful. the displayed letter is just an indication of how long it MIGHT take, and almost meaningless. your service is a B service, perhaps with a brake fluid change. the time this would take to do is indicated to you in the form of a letter C. quoting this letter supposedly helps your MB dealer schedule the appropriate amount of workshop time, as i say this is approximate as they have no idea of the condition of various consumables before they see the car.

a recap, your car has either A or B services with various extras included by mileage, elapsed time or upon visual inspection.

Yes, the new A-G system is useless. The car generates an ESS based. Only from that will you really know whats needed. You're car can be clocked, several E classes have been. Does the interior, body work, condition of the car match one thats only done 13k miles which is very low. Car will have needed services every year so it should have done 3.

What is a C service?

Thank you everyone. It's booked in for a C service. It really is a lovely clean vehicle, inside and outside, and, except for the intermittent gearbox problem [say no more for the reason stated] I cannot fault it. I bought it from a very reputable garage and 'they' have bent over backwards to put it right. They have been so good, I will definitely buy another car from them if the need arises. oldsoldier
