Hi,

Ive just bought a 2001 eclass estate.

Inside the cigarette lighter / ashtray opening panel there is a switch with a 3 wiggly arrows pointing upwards. It looks like some kind of heater switch (with a simple on/off setting).

I cant find it in the manual, can anyone advise what it is and what it does??

Many Christmas thanks for any thoughts,

Lee

mbashton,
The auxiliary heater switch lights up when the switch is in the 'off' position. The unit activates automativcally at <7 degrees C.

Hi & Welcome,

As per above it is a diesel fueled auxiliary heater. If you have it take the manual out of your car and put it on the cistern, that way when you get some peace and quiet read through it as there is a lot to a Mercedes that is worth knowing.

I had my handbooks there for months to take in the 1000 pages, and yes you do get the best out of you car that way

Don't all diesels have an aux heater these days?
No switch for mine but I believe it has one that comes on automatically. I know the Landy has one as they did an emergency recall to disconnect it (they had a tendancy to burst into flames apparently).
Within 1 min of starting I had enough heat in mine to clear the ice from the windscreen with the demister last night. I can't imagine that the engine was able to do this on it's own.

You can switch it off on the dash menu on the W211/ W203, quite why you'd want to though...??

Not seen that option on mine in any of the menus. I know there are some that work on a timer so you can have it come on 15 mins before you get in the car (and I believe that is in the menus now) but on the standard ones I believe it's just there silently and kicks in if it decides it needs it.

My mistake JB, the W203 is switchable from the menu, the W211 is on al the time unless you have the 'AC Off' button activated.
So to achieve warmer feet faster, turn the AC on

Interesting ..... - I've got the AC off at the moment as it was too cold for damp air this morning, I figured I didn't need the cooling ability at the moment and it's worth a couple of mpg.
So, the pre-heater doesn't kick in without the AC - sounds odd but ok....- how sure are you? Anyone else confirm or deny this?

I thought exactly the same as you.

It's in the manual, pg 190ish IIRC (sorry Mrs E has my car at the mo).

Thanks - I'll have a read. I did read the manual when I got the car - don't remember that one, but then in those days I never turned off the AC so probably ignored it as irrelevant - and it was 4 years ago.
