I know my vehicle is not a Mercedes but I share the power train (OM647 engine and W5A-580 tranny) of the Sprinter and I need help desperately.

I made a shocking discovery today on my 2004 Jeep GC 2.7 CRD .

The vehicle has been serviced by the dealer since new until 100k kms. I decided that I will complete all the services at 10000 km intervals from now on. I look after my vehicle well and ensure that it is maintained properly. The one item I trusted the dealer to check is the transmission fluid - with the use of the DRB III.

On the day I decided to start the 110000km service the Jeep gearbox started slipping to the extent that the engine light illuminated.

I was worried about this and decided to investigate. I thought that the oil level may be low and added 200ml of the correct fluid. The vehicle then seemed to be OK. I have ordered a dipstick from eBay and was awaiting its delivery.

Three days later the problem re-occurred. By now I have received the dipstick and checked the level. The fluid on the dipstick appeared black. I made a suction device and drew a sample of the fluid - it was pitch black - but not burnt.

Back to my discovery. Today I removed the sump pan and saw the following.

What part of the gearbox is this broken piece from?

Is it advisable to have the transmission repaired or rather replace it with a low mileage second hand unit?

Any information or advice will help.

It looks as if it's stripped some of the friction materials off judging by the oil. I've no idea what the metal bits are but it doesn't look good.

Having been there myself - my gerarbox actually stripped all of the teeth off a fair number of planetary gears - I would say go for a rebuild if you're going to keep the car for any length of time. A rebuild should come with a guarantee, but locate an independent specialist as their usually half the price of the dealers.

A second hand unit may be a viable choice, but they tend to be tied electronically to the engine management which can be a headache to correct.

Either way regular replacement of the oil say every 20,000km, contrary to dealer advice, is recommended and if you manage to get a second hand unit working on your car then start with an oil change immediately.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I'd say they look like chunks of metal. :)

Sorry I'm certainly no expert. Whatever they're from, it wants fixing.

:DThe GC 2.7D is going again!:D

Eventually I replaced the transmission with a used one ($1200) that has done about 50k miles. I also checked the valve body, replaced the input seal and filter of the used box before fitting it.

The service history of my vehicle shows that the old transmission was worked on by the dealer at about 30k miles.

The replaced transmission is much smoother than my old transmission ever was.

I also fitted a temperature sender(See attached photo) to the transmission to allow me to monitor the transmission temperature together with the EGT's etc. This also makes it easier to check the ATF level.

I will now do a partial ATF change every 25k miles.

Thanks to everyone for their input and advice.

draining the torgue convertor?

I have the same tranny in my GC, and was wondering how to drain the torque convertor, I haven't tried yet, but I heard that there is no drain plug on this baby's torque convertor. Any truth in the rumour?

so I would only be able to a partial ATF change then, probably better than nothing :(

Some disconnect a cooler pipe and spin the engine for a few seconds,,some pump it out,,others pur some new in to push it out,,or change 4 liters now and do it again say in 30k miles

The question (from post one) "What part of the gearbox is this broken piece from?"

Looking at the third photo, looks to me as if the metal is part of the magnet that is supposed to stick to the bottom of the sump pan. I cant think how this has broken away.

They must be tough boxes. I had Glycol contamination in my ATF, due to a split in the atf oil cooler (Not the Valeo rad), And i got away with a new valve control body & elctroplate. Thankfully the TC & rest of box is still ok.
