This looks interesting for the future, I have the brain of a pea at moment but would it be feasible for a 320cdi ?

Glad to hear this Toby. When you do, take photos. Especially of the "kit" you have to make up ( resistors etc).

Thanks.

1/4 watt are fine as there is no current, just signal voltage.

Ok, here we go...

First identify your components. L-R = diode, 470 ohm and 1000 ohm resistors.

Components.jpg

Solder the 470 ohm resistor to the tail of the diode. Note the silver band on the diode shows which is the +ve blocking end.

Diode1resisitor.jpg

Add the 1k ohm resistor to the other end of the diode and add appropriate wire then clip off any stray tails.

Bothresistors.jpg

Fit heatshrink tubing to the bare sections.

and then tape over with material tape for protection to complete.

I've used the colour code in accordance with the first diagram, so red is +12v, yellow is MAF, green is EGR transducer signal.

Yes I will. That's the plan anyway. Now that I think I know what to buy, and after a nose round alexanderfoti's set-up, I'll be taking pics.

I have a friendly electical engineer near me and I think he'll have a go at it.

Can't wait to see if this fixes my smoke problem but at least it's a cheap try.

Thanks Toby. DM has since posted photos of how to make the kit. Take photos though of the actual wires you attach to, that would be very helpful.

Quick question. As I said earlier the wire from MAF PIN 5 to plug 2 pin 24 on my car is Brown/White, not yellow/white. I have no yellow/white from the MAF at all. Is there any way I can confirm this is the correct wire? I would have thought that pin 5 would be the same on all 270's, the different colour does seem odd.

Had a look round Alexanderfoti's set-up on Sat morning (thanks for letting me take a look!).

Took a few pics for my own reference and I intend to make a start this weekend.

I'll keep everyone posted (well, W210 owners anyway!).

Don't worry about the wire colour. If it's from pin5 and it varies from ~2v to ~4.5v with revs, it's the correct wire.

Normally there are only 4 connections;
12v
Gnd
5v
signal

There can be a fifth connection which is the temp sensor.

Hi Toby, any update on your mod. I will be doing the mod sometime soon and would be interested in your findings. I had a look at the wiring toaday and it looks like my e320 cdi has yellow/white, red/black and grey/black wires for the circuit. Hopefully you can confirm this too.

Not started yet. My electronics friend has taken a look and has agreed to knock up the resistor, etc as per dieselman's pics.

I'll chase him up and see where we are.

i see an ebay opportunity for someone here! make up the resistor/diode mod with wires and instructions and hawk it on ebay. parts cost = pennies, could sell for £10-£20.
