Just popped into my local stealer to ask about my next service. Should be about June at about 42000 miles. SL350 due a B Service.
Bad News: They said on top of the B Service there would be:
Plugs @ £245
Air and fuel filters @ £250
Gearbox oil change at @ £200
Which makes atotal of about £1100 probably plus VAT.
Good News: They said none of the service is fixed price so they are prepared to come to 'an agreement' with me and offer substantial discount to help.
Hoping to drop that final bill down to a more acceptable figure.
I won't use an indi as I want to keep the mobilo breakdown service running.
Thoughts??

Malc. I remember you saying this before, but they assure me they can't stamp the book unless they are changed at the recommended interval of 70K or 4 yrs whichever is first.
I'm actually pleased they will be doing the filters as I'm sure it will improve economy and protect the engine. In the old days we changed air filters every year regardless.
If I secure a good discount then I'll be happy enough - money in the bank is doing nothing at the moment anyway!

You're probably better at it than the dealers doing it yourself. :)

I will use Olly and get the book stamped, he does not charge much and does things well. This way i can fit my own plugs.

Service / maintenace cost for SL 350

Hi guys I am looking to sell on my C200K which I've had for 6 years and go for a SL 350 of about the same age (2003 /2004)...a car I have been drooling for years! My C200K as you are probably aware dont cost much to service and run..i service it at the main dealer, with not many parts needing replacement (other than brake discs and tyres). I am hoping that the SL will not cost too much to run too, but I am hoping someone will be able to advise me on how much typically do I need to spend on the service / maintenance? I dont intend to service this at the main dealer, preferably a independent specialist will do!

Servicing should be ok-ish but should something break (e.g. strut) then OUCH!

SL was an expensive car new and still is to maintain

99.9% of the SL350's do not have struts, it was a £3250 extra and I have only ever seen 2 cars for sale with ABC.

A 2004 car should be OK and cost little more if any to service or repair than any other car, There should for the best part be just be the discs and pads that cost no more than any other model.

They are so nice to drive

My plugs were changed at 42,000 miles which co incided with the 4 year time limit.

Its an odd thing the plugs, when I took mine out after 8 years they were still like new, and I can detect no difference with the new ones in any way, though my car is only at 48k do these things have feelings or birthdays

Hi Malcolm,
i cant help feeling they are changed "just in case"
In the old days we replaced plugs when there was a mis fire but they used to only seem to last 2 minutes compared to modern ones.
The way I use the car, it wont be the age thats reached first !!:D

There is a theory that modern plugs do not need changing but should be loosened from their housing periodically to ensure that they do not become welded in. Once accessed and loosened they may as well be changed for the sake of the cost of a plug.

Old wives tale?

My plugs were changed at 39k miles when the car was nearly 4.75yrs. old.

The plugs were £7.45 +VAT each....total £140.06

Replacing the plugs was £229.66 +VAT.....£269.85 almost twice the cost of the plugs.

At a grand total of £409.91 I do not want to be replacing the plugs too often.

NB Theses were main dealer rates.
