2002 A140 Classic
Hi,

Can anyone help, My Partner has a 2002 A140 Classic, We are expecting our first child in March next year.

I understand that this model has a AKSE system in it, that disables the Passenger airbag when a AKSE baby seat is fitted.

This is a problem for us and these are not suitable.

We have been brought a Very good quality All in one Travel system that has a car seat and Car seat base with it, this will allow us to take the car seat out of the car and put it straight in the buggy frame.

But to use this we need to disable the Passenger Airbag in the car.

Can anyone advise how this can be done, I'd rather not have to take the car to Mercedes direct if possible

Thanks

DJT

Hi,
I believe you can buy a transponder off of E-bay that you simply can stitch into the covers of the car seat that will disable the Passenger side airbag, when the child seat is placed in the passenger seat

Does anyone know where you can locate one of these transponders as we need to put a seat in the SLK from time to time. I don't really fancy spending a fortune on the MB one.

Nothing there at the moment. Presumably these are transponders that people have removed from MB child seats as opposed to them being sold separately?

I don't think you would get any joy from going direct to mercedes - we had a similar problem and went to our local dealer to disable the air bag and was told yes they could do it but were not allowed to for safety reasons. If we sold the car with the airbag disabled and the car was involved in an accident then they would still be liable!

Yep, you need to find a person how has star diagnostic (real or Chinese one ), and ask him do the job. Of course I don't know what insurance company says if a modified car is involving an accident...

I was also looking for those transponders, I found couple of them but they were quite expensive even in ebay. So I assembled child seat to back seat (back seat of 210 is rather better reachable than 140?)

I do know that the airbag plug can be removed and a 2.2Ω to 2.7Ω resistor can be fitted in its place.

I cannot go along with the idea though of disconnecting any safety device

sometimes asked to do this, but never will for obvious reasons as above.

best week yet gaz, probably never have a week like this again! i only have 4/5 jobs booked in for next week so far, might be nice to have a chance to catch up with other stuff like bookwork etc! more likely i will end up rushed off my feet though. hopefully getting out for a blast on the KTM on sunday, weather permitting.

I've never seen this quoted before. When I needed to temporary fix my steering airbag I worked it out to be a 4.5R and it worked fine.
Didnt want to mention it though

I think that I was the one that told you the resistance, but anything under 5 ohm is fine 2.7 is near the actual average value

Sorry, you have been helpful but this wasn't me. Don't think I mentioned it, here anyway. I remember sitting in the garden with a big scope on my lap measuring the a.b. output. I vaguely remember it is something like 1 millivolt, 2 second output with a fast 10 millivolt pulse.

Anyway does this conversation remind you. http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=16663&highlight=airbag+resistor

I could use some help finding a circuit diagram and wire location for interior light though;)

That does take me back,, embarrassing in some ways as we were only interested in the sensing circuit when the air bag is not being deployed,, we had another one after that where a guy fitted a new steering wheel to a 201 ;):D

when you consider the minimal sensing voltage it is easy to understand how airbag faults can be simply down to a connector, which often looks fine! just unplugging/reconnecting will often fix them for years. note that these connector 'faults' are not faults at all, the airbags could still be deployed in an accident, but the control unit cannot 'see' them in its monitoring state with such a low sensing voltage.

And yes correct,, in the other info taken from elsewhere, the talk is of a resistor with a 25 w rating, that is just silly as the sensing circuit only draws micro amps and a 1/8th watt would do just fine, in the event of a collision the 1/8 th watt would just blow.
