Music/Sound one minute, then nothing!

Hi all,

I'm the happy recent purchaser of a C230K Coupe 2001, with command sat nav and all the extras...

Bought the car on Saturday and during the test drive, had the music blaring nicely from the Bose system.

Two days later, I have NOTHING! The command is on and shows the radio or cd player, but no noise is coming through the speakers.

I've checked every fuse I can find but they all seem fine and I don't have the fuse diagram...

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Ta muchly!

Might sound daft but have you hit the mute button by mistake?

If you have a phone installed unplug it and test, other than that power the whole thing down and back up again

Hi there,

There's no telephone installed...

How do you mean 'power the whole thing down'? I've been driving since Saturday on and off and the sound remains dead.

Thank you in advance!

Any thing digital can lock up, disconnect the battery for a few minutes and connect up again.

You will have to reset the windows, close them and hold the switch in the up mode for a few seconds with the key turned to 2, and the ESP warning lamp will go away once you drive the car

Get it on STAR, it can do diagnostic tests on Comand

I've got it booked in for a service at what seems like a good indie on Monday. Fingers crossed it's nothing too expensive!

My CD player burned out after about 2 yrs of playing death metal at high volume. It was replaced under warranty and a fan was fited underneath it to keep it cool. Apparently this happens a lot and the fan is a mercedes part for this problem.

Right, more news on my problem:

Tried a different Comand unit, no joy.

The Comand, interestingly, can't recognise that a CD changer is installed, tried a different CD changer, no joy.

Took to Independent Merc Specialist to get on the Diagnostics program. It recognised a fault in the CAM bus, but wasn't any more specific than that. The guy, at the time, without taking the whole car to pieces, assumed it was the amp.

Tried a different amp, no joy...

Have traced the fibre-optic cable from all sources to all destinations and there is no obvious damage.

All fuses are in place and working.

I'm totally baffled and infuriated! Any more ideas?

Update on the problem:

My indie got it on STAR, which seemed to highlight more problems, rather than specifically solve this one! He DID manage to get the sound back up, by 're-initialising the optical network', which I was made up about!

But a couple of days after it was all working, the sound cut out again. I planned to take it back to the workshop the following day, but when I came back to the car the next morning, the sound had returned!!

This has happened again since.

He's raised a query with Mercedes Technical, who think that its an internal fault with the COMAND, possibly heat related, and suggests finding someone to repair it.

I've searched around and have emailed:

headunit-repair.co.uk
clusterrepairsuk.co.uk
mapleaudio.co.uk

Any other specialists anyone can recommend?

Instead of just replacing random parts get it diagnosed properly by people who what they are doing. Alfie and Richard from Comand Online based in Woking, Surrey will be able to help.

You already said you tried a different Comand unit and it didnt solve the problem so why do you think your Comand needs a repair?

Yes, I made that exact point to the garage, but he said that by the time I tried using a different comand unit, the faulty one had already caused the optical network to come down, so even a non-faulty unit wouldn't work, until someone with the appropriate kit re-started the optical network.

So do comand-online do repairs/diagnostics? I checked out the website and couldn't see anything indicating that they did...
