E320 Estate AV 2007 - drivers side dipped headlamp is out, switched in a new bulb and no joy. Garage say it must be the igniter unit and say its about £500 all in to change.

Does that sound about right????

Go on Ebay and pay about £30 for an ignitor. But it might be the ballast...also on Ebay for about £30.

Does it matter that it was working when I bought it?

Thanks for the eBay link - if I have to pay I'm going down that route. As ever you guys are genius!!!

Nope, it matter not that it was working, if you get a fault this quick you are covered under all laws

It's pretty quick and straight forward to change both the ballast and the igniter from one side to the other to test them. I would have thought your garage would have done this in order to give you an accurate diagnosis rather than just assuming

Ok - it was water ingress into the ballast/headlight unit which has corroded the connectors to both. Solution is a complete headlight switch. £474 for the unit (plus VAT!!!!) and 1 1/2 hours labour.

The garage I bought it from are paying parts and I'm picking up labour as I got the car in Ely and I can't be bothered to take it back to them (from Portsmouth).

All in all I'm happy!
