Injector seals leaking onto engine, creating a hard tar like deposit. Can be difficult to remove

As above, but not expensive because you can remove it yourself. I've done it in the past, on a cold engine. Using a flat blade screwdriver. It chipped away quite easily.

I'm about to do mine now as 2 are leaking. Once I remove the leak off pipe and electrical plug how do I remove the solenoid.not wanting to force anything and break at present. Spent a couple of day soaking and scraping the crap from around the injectors

If you've managed to clean it up well, and if you're lucky, you may find that it comes out with a bit of levering with a couple of large screwdrivers. Mine did: and I had the engine nice and hot at this point.

At least one person on here has suggested turning the engine over with the clamp removed or loosened and a blanket over the injector to "pop" it out.

The correct way to remove a recalcitrant injector is to use an impact extractor, although the injector may be damaged if you need to use a lot of force:

or failing that, remove the entire front of your car and use an hydraulic hoist like this: :shock::shock:

...and people buy diesel cars?

Diesel costs more, smells awful, and you have problems like this.....I am far from convinced.

Aside from the mechanical questions, if diesel costs 5% more than petrol, but yields 25% more mpg...what's the problem?

I did one of mine Saturday
I had bought a puller but didn't need it in the end.
Took the car for a blast up the motorway a couple of junctions. This got the engine nice and hot. the Tar goes liquid when hot.
The injector cam out realy easy as I was removing the clamp.
Cleaned everything up with brake cleaner and re assembled wit a new washer as some special grease (Thank you).
My only problem was the bolt & clamp I bought from MB were different so I had to re use the old ones.
Looks like someone had stripped the threads in the head and retapped the holes.

Mine now seems fine

If I had to do another I would not bother soaking the injector as mine just gummed up every day.
I started to soak mine but gave up after a few days as it just made more mess.
with the engine hot you shouldn't have a problem unclipping the connector

Cost is a minor issue due to better efficiency. Yes, it's a bit smelly, so carry and use gloves when refuelling.

Problems like this as opposed to snapped-off spark plugs in the head, perishing HT leads and failed coil packs?

Also, if I were unlucky enough to be in a big crash, I'd rather be in a diesel car, where the fuel is less prone to explosive ignition.

Swings and roundabouts.

(Thanks you)

You're welcome. Presumably it was enough?

 I hope that doesn't come back to bite you later.

I can't dispute the thermal efficiency of diesel, but the constant horror stories about injectors issues, dpf problems etc... it does seem that the diesels need more maintenance than petrol which could well offset the fuel efficiency?

Don't mind me, I am a petrol dinosaur who thinks all cars should have v8 petrol engines, I know that I am destined for extinction ;)

The only Black Death I know is the septicaemic plague. It wiped out a third of the population of the known world (i.e. Europe, Brittain and North Africa) in the Middle Ages. That's what you get for living too close together with poor hygiene! :)

Cole, is that picture showing the valves and stuff with the rocker cover removed? Sorry, poor resolution pictures on my phone! If it is, we normally call that mess "sludge" in SA. Toyota diesels are specially prone to sludging up, and we found that using certain brands of oil (same API specs, same viscosity, same indications, but different brands) make the problem worse.

Never mind, I had a look on the PC. How on earth did the owner live with that vehicle for so long? And how did you get it cleaned up? Good grief!

The wordly wise mechanics will know this, but even though not exactly the same it does happen to petrol engins as well.

Unknown why or how but my step bro lost a very nice low milage escort petrol car because of it.
After running bad a few days then stopped dead, i towed him home and after finding nothing wrong took the rocker cover off to check the timing belt hadn't slipped and was shocked at what i saw. The whole valve area had carbonised in to one sticky oily mass.
Spent ages stripping and decoking, cleaning etc, but it was terminal and the engine eventually siezed completely.
Perhaps a blocked breather or faulty egr. We'll never know.

This is one of the main reasons for using Ford oil in their cars...
