Hi All

I Recently purchased a C220 DCI on a 06 plate.

I have noticed over the past few days that the reverse gear is a little difficult to engage and when driving 5th gear if i catch it at the wrong point gives a grinding sensation through the gearstick.

I don't hear a grinding noise just feel it in the car. The problem in 5th does happen more regular on a downshift compared to up shift so it seems odd to me that the 2 top right gears seem difficult?

Really hope it is a simple problem to resolve so any comments from the forum experts or experiences with similar issues would be most grateful

Thanks for the time

hi,

more likely that you have air in the clutch hydraulics.
Try to move around the rubber hose that connects to the brake fluid container from the clutch cylinder. Any high bend will be air trap.

Thanks for the info, I am away this week so will take a look at the weekend is it easy to identify the hose mentioned and to identify if there is air locked in?

Hi sorry for late reply as I was travelling.

I have not done anything to the car yet but ran a test this morning and noticed that when the car is off all gears are smooth as silk but when the engine is running the gears are difficult (stiff) worse in reverse and 5th.

Finally to add to this when cruising at a set speed there is a regular engine stutter / hesitation? The car has 53k miles so quite surprised with these issues

Any help most welcome

Well I have gone through everything and nothing at all on this, with what you say I wonder if the clutch is dragging making the shifts hard, as its OK with engine off

Could be sounds plausible maybe air in the line as previously mentioned or other I think I will contact garage where I got it an have them sort it out was hoping it may be something like transmission oil or similar

Sorry to bump just a quick update.

I took the car back to the garage where it was purchased and all is now well after the garage took it to a mercedes specialist for repair.

It seems to have been the syncro that was faulty this has now been repaired and the joy of driving the mercedes has returned :)

Thanks to all who replied

I have a -04 6-gear manual w203, and have problems when i try to put 1st or 2nd on when the car is moving. 1st is hard to get in when i have 5km/h, 2nd when i have 10-15km/h. Like i really have to push it in.

Reverse is really tense, i basically hit it left and then lift it up.
5th gear pops out sometimes after changing from 4th.

Got oils changed but no effect, most probably also the syncros at least on 1st and 2nd. Dont know about the 5th though.

Learned to live with those problems, syncros are just too expensive to be changed. :(

For the few manual boxes that MB sell I would have thought that buying in from ZF would have made all the difference. Their boxes are fautless
