Just acquired a 1998 CLK 230 and it needs new tyres. All four corners are 205/55/R16's but the tyre shopping sites say they should be different front to back (as do some posts on this site). Could anyone tell me how to find out what size is right for my car? The cruise control doesn't work which started me thinking about tyre sizes. The wheels are those horrible Elegance alloys. Many thanks in advance.

Take em off and read the part number on the back ? Measure the diameter and width.... Someone more qualified than me might know an easier way!

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
Just poke a pod through a hole in the wheel and measure the width

Pretty sure my pre facelift 2004 270CDI CLK had 205/55 16" on the front but 225/50 16" on the rear. Sales blurb that I kept says 7J rims front but 8J rims on back. Sounds to me like someone previous wanted to make a saving on the 2 back tyres?

My newer CLK also has different tyres front to back but these are 18"

I agree my CLK when I had was different front to rear .... Those rear tyres may fit a wider wheel I guess but previous owner just went for 4 the same for cost reasons I guess... Some of the tyre sites tell you what fits what rims..

For what it's worth, I discovered the brake pedal switch was stuck in the "on" position. I have changed that and - voila - no more problems with cruise control.
Would have expected a warning light, to be honest, as my E300 has a warning light for wearing odd socks, eating meat on a Friday, etc etc;)
