My previous cars including an E240 did a "beep, beep" when locking and unlocking. Today I switched on the sound notification on my W212 E250 only to find that it used the horn to notify locking status.

I now have to deselect this function, otherwise when arriving home late, I will be waking our neighbours and from a legal viewpoint, breaking the law.

I did think that this should be so in the UK, it can be turned off on STAR

It can be turned off via the cluster menu as the OP did!

STAR is the Mercedes diagnostics system used to trouble shoot and code vehicles. It is a stand alone computer system that can be connected to your car via the ODB socket.

Google tells me nothing about "STAR" please advise

It is switchable as you know, MB seem to be leaving more things activated for foreign use.

STAR is the MB diagnostic kit, it should be possible to disable with STAR

The locks on a 212 make a really loud clank down, and the lights IIRC go on (unless you turn convience lighting off) so you can tell when it locks

You hear nothing on my 140 when it closes and locks, my 216 is like a pin ball machine :D:D

My lights only come on when dark and locking

Your 140 will be vacum based, the 216 electric.

Guess whats cheaper and more likely to fail?

Yes that vacuum system was so lovely, I have the soft close on both, so I have that noise as well, thats the only thing that I do not like about it

When we hired one of these a while back we could not turn off this "convenience" lighting feature despite going through all menus for 3 or 4 attempts...ended up disrupting the campsites everytime we locked it, so much so we just left it unlocked (though sometimes the "convenience" lights came on when opening the boot or door too)!

Every time those lights come on/go off a little motor raises and lowers the light beam...combine it with convenience lighting and sounds likely there'll be some expensive bill at some point in its life.

It's true the locks make a nasty clunk too, nothing like the vacuum systems of old, i don;t see why it needs an audible warning!
