Hi guys, just wondered if these engines are notorious for chucking out a noticeable amount of fart on heavy acceleration and when overtaking etc? Mine has done 118k miles fully serviced and running fine, but when I look in the rear view mirror I do notice a cloud of smoke!
Any ideas?

Thanks Jono

Highly likely to be a malfunctioning EGR valve. Quite common. Why not consider doing an EGR delete? Very good mod.
Check out the post on the subject by dieselman.

My only concern would be the increased warm up time because its only 10 makes to work and it takes long enough as it is !

Yes, my 2004 270 CDI CLK did exactly that even from demonstator miles (bought at 5000 miles).

Driving into sun with a hot engine and then overtaking, look in the rear view mirror and cor blimy!
Typical characteristic of the engine I was assured. It cleans itself on longer runs.

Don't believe everything you are told. If you do the egr delete, the smoke is virtually a thing of the past.
