The car has a iPhone 3 cradle in the armrest.

Since I now have an iPhone 4, the cradle is useless. Do I NEED to have this cradle in the arm rest for Bluetooth to work? I.e. can I remove it to create space in the armrest?

In there a way of being able to charge my iPhone 4 from this?

Well iphone4 and iPhone 3 use the same connector.... Given its in the armrest can u not just hack it a bit to enable the connector to clip in...then it will charge and you can use it....probably the easiest and cheapest option ...

As jberks said later 211's had blutooth built into the head unit.. In which case, NO you dont need the phone connector in the arm rest..

I too have a phone connector in the arm rest but I never use it because when I upgraded the head unit to COMAND NTG 2.5 it had the blutooth built in. So I have removed the cradle in order to use the space within the arm rest.
I just leave my phone in my pocket and when I switch the COMAND on I have it all up and running..
Until recently I used to switch off the blutooth on my phone when i wasnt in the car in the belief that it would extend battery life..
Now I dont bother and to be honnest I cant say i have noticed any difference in Battery performance..
If my phone is low on battery then I use a car plug in charger.. Its no more inconvenient that opening the arm rest and removing the phone from the holder every time you leave the car..

Thanks for the reply guys. It’s a late 2006 (56). I need to plug the phone in for the HF to work but I was told that I need the unit there to make Bluetooth HF work. This is not correct?
From your comments I get the impression that if I don’t need to plug it in, I don’t need the unit in the armrest?

I bought a cheap extension from ebay to plug into the cradle and then into my phone to allow it to charge from this (as the cradle is the wrong shape) but that didn’t seem to work. Any thoughts?
Also, there is another plug on a wire coming out from the unit, what is that for?

Well this is the cradle in the armrest (pic below).

All I want to know is if I absolutely need it for the bluetooth to work? (Reason for wanting to remove it that it's for a iPhone 3, however I have an iPhone 4)

Also, what is this plug for?

Just remove the cradle and buy a Mercedes HFP bluetooth cradle.

Only a MY09 W211 will have bluetooth built in.

Yes the cradle has to be plugged in for bluetooth connectivity. The plug is to connect the cradle to the optional ipod interface that is available if you have Comand, to use the Iphone for music.

It may be possible to use a Viseeo device instead. I replaced an old cradle for a Nokia phone, with a Viseeo MB4. It plugs into the central consol then my phone bluetooth connects to the viseeo. The phone then works through the normal comand system on the car. The Viseeo device has downloaded all my contacts from the phone. Someone on this forum I think it was a previous post by Gkinghorn put me on to this track. I phone Comand systems and they were very helpful. The Viseeo works with a number of different Smartphones. Might be worth a check to see if this is an option for you.

The Viseeo MB4 was £199, and was easy to fit. It works okay for me with my Blackberry, although it occaisionally loses connection and I have to re-sync.
