My E270 has been suffering from low temperature 50-60 degrees. After reading several threads it was clear that I should replace the thermostat. I now have the thermostat and am going round a friends to replace it this evening. However when I stopped at a shop to pick up the oil filter removal tool while checking I have the correct one I noticed that the fan was turning while the engine was running and the temperature was only about 70 degrees. Does this mean that I really only needed a temp sensor or would you expect this ?

The fan will turn a bit with the engine running, was it spinning really fast and making a humming noise? The fan kicks in about 95.

Mine turns slowly only when air con is on .

Anyway thermostat is now changed and the car gets up to temperature.

The replacement thermostat was not quite the same which caused a few problems.

1 No thread at the front
2 Temperature sensor was not a tight fit so had to use a second o ring.
3 there was a pilot hole for pipe clamp but no thread so taped one

Will give it a proper run tomorrow.

H'mm :( W210 E300 TD runs at just under 80 so I think a new thermostat is on my wish list, now that I've read this thread

thanks ;)

So on a 60 mile run I manged to get 56 mpg at one point. Got stuck in traffic for 20mins and this reduced to 52mpg over the 120 miles.

Its normal for the pipe clamp not to be tapped..
And yes its a fairly routine (about every 5 years) procedure to change the thermostat..
Ive had 2 x C270 Cdi and have had to change the thermostat on both..
My temp sensor didnt inspire confidence so I daubed a little Hylomar blue on it..
Its never leaked anyway !!
