Hi

This is my first post on any forum, so please forgive me if I've broken any un written rules! A few months ago I bought a 1999 E280 auto, I believe it's a W211, due to a broken wrist. My plan was to run it until my cast came off, then go back to my beloved Land Rovers. But I liked it so much, I decided to keep it, and save my Landy for fun. In the last week it has started to make a clicking type noise, from under the car, it sound like it's coming from the gearbox area. It does not make the noise when cold, and only when it is coasting, not when under power. When at standstill you can hear the clicking but it is much quieter than when moving. Any Ideas ? I've never liked auto gearboxes, and this noise just confirms my fears!!

Thanks very much

David

Welcome to the forum.
It's unfortunate that most members join when they are expeiencing problems.

So the clicking is only heard when the engine and gearbox are warm?

Does this clicking noise occur and is it worse when:
  1. stationary and in park?
  2. stationary and in nuetral?
  3. stationary and in drive?
  4. stationary and in reverse?

Is it a 5 speed or 7 speed gearbox?
Does the frequency of clicking change with engine or road speed?
Definitely a 211? (The VIN will start something lilke WDB211 if it is, otherwise WDB210 for a 210).
You will get a clicking noise when coasting if in nuetral.

This will be a 210 and 5 speed.. I do not think that you could hear anything clicking in side the box

I'd agree Malcolm.
I'd thought that it would be a W210 and 5 speed box, but just wanted to make sure that the OP hadn't mis-typed.

I do remember that mine used to make a clicking noise from the gear selector if I popped it into nuetral to coast when in traffic facing down a hill.

Could be the handbrake cable clip snapped, the noise in this case would be the cable fouling the prop.

I was thinking that but re read the post and it does it when the car is not moving
