Well, another year has passed and yet another MOT pass clocked up.
She did fail last year but a track rod end sorted that, and that was a free main dealer test so perhaps it was a bit too strict and they were looking for any excuse?. If all they could find was that, I don't think that was bad.

Decided to pay for the test this year and waning to ensure the car remains perfect (I don't want to cut any corners) I gave this year's tester the 'advisories' from last year to pay special attention to - despite another year and another 24,000 miles, she came back with nothing more than a 'Nothing worth worrying about' comment.

142k and 7 years of enthusiastic driving, and still perfect - I'm chuffed.

My V70R has had 12 passes now with no advisories, maybe I should keep it and sell the 140 as finding it hard now to drive 3 cars

Just a question (not a troll, honest)...

Does passing with no advisories mean in 'x' number of years you've done nothing to the car? No repairs etc.

Or does it mean you're having things fixed at time of service when its spotted but before the MOT says its needed?

I just wonder as perhaps in the long term the fix when it fails is cheaper?

An advisory is the tester telling you that XXX will need attention soon

Advisories do not really mean anything and for the most part can and should be ignored especially if you abide by the manufacturers maintenance regime.

I ignore them completely.

The previous 2 years I've had advisories on rear brake hoses.

This year they were not mentioned. Same tester, same garage.

I'd change the hoses if they had an advisory. You can do without most of a car's stuff except brakes and steering .. ;) I see brake hoses as a service item - at five years old they need to be changed regardless.

Is it not where the metal ferals rust on the rear pipes

Not sure I agree :confused: On the few times I've had advisories on a MOT, that means to me, that Mr MOT Man has found something that, while not a fail, is something that should be looked at sooner rather than later. I certainly don't ignore them.
As for manufacturers maintenance regimes, some suggest that oil is changed every 20 000 miles.

Yes, exactly that. There are quite rusty and I will change them soon as the rear discs and pads are just about ready for change too.

many unpainted metal parts are sheradised or its equivalent, and depending on the quality, surface rust can soon appear, which isnt a problem, a good MOT tester should be able to determine the difference between this and deep corrosion affecting the integrity of the fitting,

More of an issue with brake hoses is age related breakdown of the rubber either the outer sheath and/or the internal reinforcing webbing which can lead to splitting or blebbing under pressure

.... too many cars!
Here in Ireland we dont get 'advisories' as such on our NCT. You might get a word in your ear from the tester if there is something worth noting. Any car of ten years old or more must be tested every year and from four years old to ten its every two years.
My W126 which has covered a massive 2800 miles this year and is now in storage needs to be tested every year as does the W124 which might get to cover 4000 miles, yet my Passat, which will have covered 70,000 miles by the time its a year old and will have more on the clock than either of the old MB's wont need a test for another three years!

My 140 got through with a low brake pad warning, but I have decided I am going to sell it, I just cannot look after 3 cars these days

That is a shame but three cars and only one driver could be regarded as indulgent.

Mine passed this year but with an advisory about corroded rear brake pipes. When I took it back and asked them to replace they said they'd just cleaned them off and put on a protective coating of something (can't remember what).

I'm sorry to pick you up on this, but it's a personal gripe of mine. You mean ferrules. Please accept my sincerest apologies.

Pedant mode off.
