Can someone advise how to remove this please ? Mine needs some of the vanes re-aligning.

Is it a T20 Torx through the bottom of the vent ?

Cheers

Jonny

I am not printing off any more anything for anyone, I get nothing but insults for my efforts by some, so a lot of post unanswered this last few days.

Funny thing was this was the only forum in the world where someone would go to the trouble of searching and Emailing the fix, but that has come to an end

Hi Malcolm - appreciate all that you do and think it's appalling that anyone feels it necessary to give you abuse.

Not seen any threads where this has happened recently, but did spend half an hour looking last night as I know you we're disgruntled. I did see a deleted thread though, but if it was in there and I didn't see it before it was deleted I'd certainly have stuck my two pen'orth in.

This is it http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showpost.php?p=930645&postcount=43

I know that by the amount of thanks that this just is not true, even by percentage I get as many right as others, there have been days when I have had 6 threads of thanks for the help, I have not answered more than 15 post in the last 3 days and no one has come froward to help about 40 members.

It is not a matter of just getting them right, just getting the thread going brings in new ideas and post. No one can fix every car by a internet forum, so many parts can fail in so many different ways. nearly 4000 emails sent in this last 3 years, all the searching where no one else has come forward.

Had the above post in the link been addressed to someone else the mods would have deleted it, so I will just use the forum for pleasure.

In the past have you not been helped? Why would you think the help would stop now?

T20 indeed.

T20 indeed.

I have been helped before Ciaran, however, Malcolm tends to reply swiftly and comprehensively. Appreciate your answer re the T20 Torx, however, I am going out to work on the car this morning. Having a T20 in my hand means I have the right tool, but then what ?

Malcolm would probably have the information on what to do with it and where to stick it (!) which will save me sitting around hoping that someone else bothers to post.

It's not just the quality of Malcolm's posts, but the speed with which he replies that I find invaluable.

Plus - he's a thoroughly nice bloke :D

No it is not, as not needed, it needs pulling hooks only on between the third and fourth slat down turned to pull on the outer side edges.

All went perfectly - vents "hooked" out and were pretty simple to reclip the vanes into the guide bar that links them all together.

You can actually see two small holes on the outer edges of the vents which I think are designed for the hooks. I actually used an Allen key, but the proper hooks with a handle would obviously be much easier.

I've taken a few pics to show the process. It was a good opportunity to clean the inside of the vents and I would imagine the vanes coming apart is a fairly common problem given the design.

First pic shows the hole where you insert the hook. It's the bottom round hole and is on the outside of the vent, fairly close to the bottom.

Next pic shows the clips which need to be unclipped to get the front horizontal vanes apart from the vertical inner vanes. The clips need to be levered up ever so slightly with a very thin screwdriver.

The clip is on the lower left edge of the photo about 1/5th of the way up.

Final pic shows the guide bar and vertical vanes. The guide bar has a little circular hole for each vertical vane and there is a spindle on each vane which clips into the guide bar. It's a little fiddly to do, but once you understand the principle, it's a breeze. The guide bar is the thin strip of plastic, which goes across the middle of the picture with little circles on it.

And without your help I'd still have been hunting for the Torx screws !

It's interesting to see how the more modern Mercs are put together. Much easier to take apart and reassemble, but will they still feel as solid as the earlier models at a similar age ?

Plenty of little jobs to do, nothing major, but will post up my findings as I go along.

Tomorrow is hopefully the cup holder cover.

:)
