Various threads have recently discussed the advantages of petrol or diesel cars. And I found it hard to understand why the choice was so difficult.

Now I understand

Price of local (to me) diesel in France: £1.04 /litre
Price of Tesco diesel round London: £1.44 /litre.

So what happened to the North Sea oil, then?

Is this a serious question?

If yes...where have you been for the past 20 years or so?

If no...good one!

Yes, and I've been in France :D

Maybe there's not much NSO left, but even so . . . .

France is somewhat different though as diesel is still cheaper than petrol. It used to be that way in the UK until we all started buying diesels, now petrol is cheaper than diesel over here.

That's also because production of petrol is cheaper than diesel. In Finland we have also cheaper diesel because of tax difference in fuel and tax difference in diesel/petrol cars. Mid price today petrol 1.685€/L (lowest 1.54€) diesel 1.558€/L (lowest 1.467€).

I think its the other way around, diesel is little more than crude oil, petrol is highly refined and must cost more to produce.

How much would French diesel be if it was 1 euro to the £ as it was not so long ago?

When the euro was stronger, the diesel was cheaper (more $ per euro): that's why we're grumbling now. ;)

All depends where / who you buy from. The supermarkets round here are all at the same price (surprise ! ): 1.306 euro/l: roughly £1.04 - £1.05 /l.

I believe the reason for the spike in diesel prices in recent years is that avtur or aviation jet fuel is sourced from the same catalytic "crack" as diesel. The demand on avtur has skyrocketed in recent times and made that section of the cat crack much more in demand and of course - price is governed by demand/availability. When diesel was a low use product, it was sold at giveaway prices - The original diesel engine was thought up just to use this unwanted product. Different today with demand where it is - Nothing to do with the cost of production....

...but the petrol isn't any cheaper, and nor are the supermarkets or a restaurant meal, nor lot of other things. It used to be the case France was way cheaper than the UK, now not so much...Spain on the other hand is a lot cheaper than France (food, beers, restaurants, rents, etc are not far off half price)...wonder how long that will last though...

I might be being silly but I dont buy supermarket fuel. Only the good stuff for me as cheap fuel here is cheap for a reason!

You can make petrol from left-overs at MacD -- but would you put it in your car ? ;)
