Looked at euro parts glow plugs for 95 e300d is there any difference in them

They're not that much more from Mercedes.

It's not the sort of thing you want to cut corners on given what a pain the can be to do.

Thanks ...... don't put me off I have spent 3 days building up the courage to start. I still have to find if there's any way to find bad ones before removal.

Thanks I am going to take manifold off and then soak a few times a day for a few days at least .But with the manifold off I can't heat engine as lots of people suggest....

Well got inlet manifold etc all stripped off but afraid someone's been in here before and glow plug nearest bulk head has no nut on it but the plug appears to be in place but a sure dud ,, i am thinking of just replacing the other 5 considering the age of the car , Opions please ,,bear in mind dont have a lot to spend on this one. Or any easy way to get this out.

You want to run the car, get it nice and hot and then remove the manifold

if a W124 you'll also want to replace the breather bungs as they go brittle with age.

if a w124 dont forget to make sure you put the vacuum pipe back on the crossover bar when you refit.

if you have stuck plug but can get the thread free, then run the car and try to "fire" the dead glow out under pressure, maybe carefully easing it out with plyers AND WEARING LEATHER GLOVES, GOGGLES etc! eventually it will fire free, like a bullet.

if the thread is gone then you'll need to investigate removing the plug using various tools. there is a good thread on removal of broken plugs on one of the forums if you search.

put some copper grease on the new plugs to aid future removal

fit Bosch Duraterm plugs (help today or eBay)

EDIT: You could remove the broken plug using a home-made tool/drill, or yes you could leave it in there. Up to you. The glows do still work even if the light doesnt come on at startup.

I've had nightmare with the glows on my car. Here's a few things I've learned.

The plugs are actually quite strong and don't shear off as easily as people are led to believe. The 48nm breaking point Beru specify is VERY conservative. They can usually take double that before they shear.

If you use a standard handle 3/8" ratchet there is no way you will shear them off unless you are a body builder. One of mine was so stuck that I hauled away on it with a long handled 3/8" ratchet and it just barely came out.

An ATF and acetone (or petrol) mix seems to be more effective than WD40 as an unseizing fluid. The solvent is obviously more pervasive than WD40, and ATF has amazing cleaning properties. If they are really stick, build a dam around the plug with modelling clay and fill it up with the above mix and leave over night, on a warm engine.

Generally they seize not because of the threads but because carbon gets past the tapered sealing face and packs in around the glow plug. So if you get it moving unscrew 1/4 turn, then back in half a turn, then back out until you push it another 1/4 etc, so it breaks up the carbon a bit.

If re-fitted carefully they are unlikely to seize again. Use a drill bit of the same diameter of the glow plug body to clean out the hole in the head. Just put it in the hole and twist it around with pliers with some pressure on the end. This will clean the carbon out. You can spin the engine over to eject any carbon. Shine a single LED light into the hole to check the drill bit has cleaned a circle clear on the taper seat. Slather the new glow plug in anti-seize and screw it in to the specified torque (about 30nm I think). Then screw it out, and in, and out, and in, and out ideally 6 or 8 times. This will help the tapers line up better and help avoid the carbon clogging problem in future.

Good post and thanks ,, but for the time being I am not trying to get broken one out as it right at the back against bulkhead ,wish I knew someone to take it out anyone I have asked has warned me it might go into high hundreds.

I'm not sure about the access on CDI cars, but so long as there is straight access to the plug (no oil filter housing in the way for example) then sheared plugs can almost always be extracted without needing to remove the head, and usually without destroying the original thread inside of two hours. If the original thread is destroyed a heli coil can be fitted very easily. Generally you're unlucky if it costs as much as £150 to remove a stuck or sheared glow plug. Typically they cost a lot less to remove.

There is a guy called The Thread Doctor, who is mobile and will sort them out. It needs to be sufficiently stripped down (IM off or any obstructions removed) before you should get him to tackle it. There are also a number of mechanics who post on this forum who are very good at removing sheared plugs. It's no big deal. It might cost hundreds if you had several sheared plugs though.

It's the one behind oil filter housing right at the bulk head ..and as I have never done one before I am a bit frightened.
