At the rear of the engine, you will need a dip stick to do this and the engine must be up to 80c you will see the pipe 18 coming up from the box

You will see in the DIY section that you can make your own dipstick from a lenght of curtain wire where the fluid should be 7cm up the wire with the engine running, move the shift lever through all the gates a few times and do the check with the engine running and the box in N or P

Get a 1 litre bottle from MB, they will give you the correct fluid should you require any, about £11

Okay, done the test with my diy dipstick (several times) and it appears that the car is a little low on fluid approximately 10mm (60mm measured). Will go to MB and get some ATF at the next convenient time.I asume a 1ltr bottle will suffice?.

Fine we know now that the wire goes to the bottom of the sump and the stick does not,,, so ½ liter should do it

So there's two pipes ? Is the filler pipe on passenger side of the box ? Or driver side ?

Actually there are 2 on mine..
I have the engine oil dipstick tube on the passenger side (where i use the PELA extractor) and the ATF dipstick tube on the Drivers side..

Obviously mine may be different but he did ask which side the ATF tube was ??

Its on the drivers side on the E240. Only one pipe, with a safety cap on it.

Those sink unblockers are made of the same tightly coiled spring that the proper dip sticks are made of. 99p off ebay inc postage. Think the fluid should come up the dipstick something like 55mm. Apparently the fluid level is not critical so long as it's not low. Mine is a bit overfilled (by 10mm or so) and has been for over a year with no issues.

Top it up bit by bit. You'd be surprised at how little fluid you've actually lost. At one point when the multi plug was leaking on my one the fluid level was barely on the bottom of the dip stick when hot, but it only took 0.75 ltrs to bring it back up.

So transmission 80C is when engine is 80C right? I thought that engine temp is higher like 90-95C when tranny's 80C. Now I have to check lvl again... Thx

Its best to drive it around to warm it all up, but the gearbox should be hot, the level is not that critical as long as over 80c

Yes i'm with you but engine should be fully warmed (90-95C) then gearbox will be warm at 80C right?
