Air box probe

I noticed when fixing an unrelated problem that there is a plastic probe that slots into the airbox just to the side of the Brake Fluid reservoir. It was hanging loose and may have been so since the windscreen was recently replaced.
Can anyone tell me what it does? Is it to do with management of the heated windscreen washers - if they heat, or the bottom of the windscreen itself, which also may be heated during icy spells? Or what?
