Hi!

Listen,I'm sorry to keep posting up seperate posts about this job guys.
This is a different question though.

I have just been to collect my new front springs from MB Peterborough.
I didn't take them as they appeared to have just the same amount of coils on them as my current ones.....the ones which make my car sit too high!

OK,so the ones on the car now were fitted by an uncontactable previous owner. Those don't have colour code paint marks on them.

Soooo,Iam asking anyone on this site ...If you have a 93-97 W124 Sportline Coupe (not sure if the same on saloon),could you be a poppet and look at your front springs and see what paint markings you have on them??

The ones they ordered in for me have 3 Yellow,3 Red on one coil. Then on the next coil down have 1 Blue marking.

You know what I'm starting to wonder?Whether or not I actually have the right springs on now,and its something else making the car sit a good 4-5 + cms higher than it should.I mean, would the springs pads make any more than a cm of difference? I thought you could only get max 1cm increase from the thickest spring pad.
Top mount too thick???

Urgh this is a nightmare. Can see her going to a specialist unless someone here can make my day! ;)

TIA

Steve:)

the only colour that is relevant is the single red or blue stripe on it's own coil.

the other colours bunched together are merely for production processes.

the red indicates the shorter springs due to production tolerances

the blue indicates the longer springs due to production tolerances.

pads are available in 4 thicknesses.

they increase in 5mm increments.

each 5 mm equates to approx 9 mm at the wheel due to geometry of the suspension.

so the difference in height between the thin pad and the fattest pad at the front wheels is approx 1 inch.

I wouldn't select or reject springs based in the number of coils in the spring

If the dealer has the VIN and the list of options on the car then the springs should be correct

.

So I was right, these are the longer/wrong springs then.

Where do you get this info from David?? I want to take this info to Mercedes so they can get the right ones in.

They have given me the print out of the pages which gives them their info, from the Parts System.

If you add up the points it shows that they have got me the correct springs.

Yet you say the red stripe are what I need.

Just trying to make it uber clear mate.

Thanks again :D

Steve,

Apparently my car has the Sportline stuff on it. I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know of colours and number of coils.

There's no point in looking at other cars. The springs on W124s are specified according to weight so what is right for another car is almost inevitably wrong for yours

Either trust the dealer or go aftermarket

The last set of aftermarket springs I bought (step forward, Euro Car Parts) were too long when fitted despite being the same length as the original springs (one of which was broken) and being the "correct" spring according to ECP

VIN WDB1240422C034641

Coil Springs Supplied A 124 321 28 04

I'm going to fit these after collecting them today, and taking the advice of a forum member.
I didn't think that the previous owner......could well have fitted E320 springs....which would expect the weight of a straight 6 engine on them, not my less smooth/weighty 2199 engine :)

that is correct spring.

put thinnest pad on.

make sure spring is turned in bottom location to correct point in lower arm.

before fitting the new spring, do compare the unfitted lengths of both springs, and coil wire thickness, and number of turns.

press down on top of each and assess subjective compressability.

note the figures down before you forget.

do allow some miles for suspension to settle after fitting and driving.

Many Thanks Nick,David and everybody who's helping me with this.

I shall get a garage to do the work now,as forking out for the spring compressor tool appears to be more expensive:shock:

I'll make sure I get a garage which will do what you've suggested, and call me if all seems a bit

Can't wait for the day when the rears and all four Sachs shocks are done.It should be,with appropriate bushes replaced/bottom and top balljoints, one quality drive and transform the old lady.

I spent 3 weeks studying the completed listings on ebay and contacting sellers you see,and managed to bag this little babe for a paltry £450 with 9m MOT.:D

Here she is,after a clay,polish and Collinite 976S for winter protection ;)

P1010107.jpg

Would be great to hear of anyone who knew this car under its original UK Reg prior to export to Portadown.
She was on L770 GGM,and was reg'd and sold new by Mercedes Slough.
She then went up to Scotland, and was in Dundee and East Kilbride (High Mains) area for some time, then Portadown, then Scotland.

For 134k she's certainly travelled!

Any help as to her history greatfully appreciated.I confess, part of the reason I guess she was that cheap was that I did the thing not to do,NO service history bar two old receipts!
