I formerly owned a Saab 9-3 saloon which had a quoted bootspace of 425 litres. The E Coupe has a quoted bootspace of 450 litres.

Is there any reason why the MB boot is so much smaller than the Saab - are they measured in a different way? Is there a big compartment somewhere I haven't found!?

The standard is I think done by seeing how many cubes of a specified size can be got in, the same used for estates, this was some time ago and there might be a different way now

Measured using the VDA method. This is the method used by the Verbund die Automobil Industrie (VDA) in Germany. A VDA figure is determined by
filling the loadspace with litre blocks, each measuring 200x100x50 mm. The blocks are then counted, and the numerical result is converted into cubic metres.

But watch out for tricks used to increase the apparent size. Leaving spare wheels out etc..

Still the way I said then, it is the only way really,,,but in some ways meaningless as there could be huge rear wheel arches and other things.

The Swedish car mags all do the block test
